Cement Mortar Compressive Strength Test

This document describes an experiment to determine the compressive strength of cement mortars according to ASTM C109. Mortar cubes 2 inches on each side are made with a mixture of 1 part cement and 2.75 parts sand by mass, with a water-cement ratio of 0.485. The cubes are cured for 24 hours in molds and then in water until testing at 7, 14, or 28 days. The compressive strength is calculated by dividing the maximum load at failure by the cross-sectional area tested. The results are analyzed to ensure consistency between samples.

EXPERIMENT NO. 05 TO DETERMINE THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF

CEMENT MORTARS.

Standard Code: (ASTM C-109)

Significance:
Cement Mortars are typically formed by a combination of cement, sand, and water. The strength
of the final mortar is strongly dependent on the type of materials and the ratio of the components,
and testing is required to determine the correct proportions for each application. ASTM C109
describes the methodology for testing the compression strength of mortars using cubes that are 2
inches on a side.
The mortar used consists of 1-part cement and 2.75 parts of sand proportioned by mass. This test
method provides a means of determining the compressive strength of hydraulic cement and other
mortars.
Apparatus:
Balance, Graduated cylinder, cube molds 2in, Tray, Trowel, Compression Testing machine,
Tamping rod.

Procedure:
 Properly oil the base plate and molds, then remove extra oil with cloth and place molds on base
plate.

 The proportions of materials for the standard mortar shall be 1 part of cement to 2.75 parts of
sand by weight with a water-cement ratio of 0.485. Mix the sample thoroughly.

 Firstly, half-fill all the cubes with mortars & tamp the mortar in each cube compartment 32 times
in about 10 s in 4 round. Every next round will be at right angle to the previous one & each

round will consist of 8 strokes over the surface of the specimen as shown in the figure. Same
procedure is repeated for the next half layer in all the cubes.

 Keep all test specimens in the molds on the base plates in the moist room from 24 h with their
upper surfaces exposed to the moist air.
 After that remove all the specimens from the molds & keep it in curing tank at a temperature of
23± 2 °C.

 Test the specimen at the desirable days i.e. at 7, 14 or 28 days etc.

 Apply the load rate at [900 to 1800 N/s]. Record the total maximum load indicated by the testing
machine at which the specimen fails and calculate the compressive strength as follows:
f = P/A
Where

f = compressive strength of mortar in MPa

P = maximum load in Newton

A = area of loaded surface mm2

Standard Limits:
 The maximum permissible range between specimens from the same mortar, at the same test age
1. 8.7 % of the average compressive strength (for three cubes).

2. 7.6 % of the average compressive strength (for two cubes).

 If the range of three specimens exceeds the maximum permissible range discard the one result
that differs most from the average and check the range of the remaining two specimens.
 If the range of two specimens also exceeds the maximum permissible range, then reconduct the
tests.
