Executive Functioning Assessment (BRIEF2)
Completed by:
Date of scoring:
The BRIEF is a rating scale completed by parents and teachers of school-age children that
assesses everyday behaviors associated with executive functions in the home and school
environment. The BRIEF2 measures the following domains of executive functioning: Inhibit,
Self-Monitor, Shift, Emotional Control, Initiate, Working Memory, Plan/Organize, Task-
Monitor, and Organization of Materials. The clinical scales compose three indexes—The
Behavior Regulation Index (BRI), the Emotion Regulation Index (ERI), and the Cognitive
Regulation Index (CRI)—and an overall summary score, the Global Executive Composite
(GEC). The BRIEF2 is designed to assist in identifying children at risk for executive
dysfunction.
Clinical Scales Behavioral Description
Inhibit Controlling impulses; appropriately stopping
own behavior at proper time
Self-Monitor Keeping track of the effect of own behavior on
others
Shift Moving freely from one situation, activity, or
aspect of a problem to another as the situation
demands; transitions; solving problems flexibly
Emotional Control Modulating emotional responses appropriately
Initiate Beginning a task or activity; independently
generating ideas
Task Completion Completing schoolwork or chores in a timely
fashion; finishing tests within time limits,
working at a satisfactory pace

developing appropriate steps ahead of time to
carry out a task, understanding and
communicating main ideas or concepts

T Scores on the BRIEF2 correspond with the following descriptors:
