PART 1 GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION OF WORK

A. This Section covers the furnishing and installation of metal lockers and benches,
including all necessary accessories, in the locations and quantities shown on the
Contract Drawings. The Contractor shall furnish all labor, materials tools and
equipment required to complete the Work.

1.04 REFERENCES

A. The referred codes and standards are intended to provide an acceptable level of
quality for materials, products and workmanship. In case of conflict between these
standards and the text of this Specification, the Specification text shall govern.

B. The latest revision of the referred codes and standards shall be used wherever
applicable. In case of conflict, the Contractor shall propose equipment, materials and
processes conforming to one group of codes and standards.

1.05 DEFINITIONS

A. bench: A long seat, often without a back, for two or more persons.

B. box lockers: Allows numerous users into the smallest amount of floor space. Box
Lockers are characterized by their compact dimensions.

C. built-in combination locks: A combination lock is constructed into the locker door.

D. built-in key locks: The lock is constructed into the locker door. Available in flat-key
or grooved-key models.

E. combination padlock: A padlock that opens only when its dial is turned through a
predetermined sequence of position identified on the dial face by numbers or letters.

F. end base: A steel panel designed to close the bottom of a locker with 150 mm legs
off so that dust and debris cannot accumulate beneath. Works in conjunction with a
front base.

G. front base: A steel panel designed to close the bottom of a locker with 150 mm legs
off so that dust and debris cannot accumulate beneath. Finished the same color as
the lockers. Works in conjunction with an end base.

H. locker: A cupboard, often tall and made of metal, in which a person can keep
possessions, and leave them for a period of time.

I. recess trim: Recess trim bridges the gap between lockers and wall and/or soffits
when the lockers are recessed into a wall.

J. slope hood: Angled hoods designed to prevent the accumulation of debris on top of
lockers. Slope hoods fit onto a row of lockers, and can be retrofitted onto any locker.

K. slope top: Angled tops designed to prevent the accumulation of debris on top of
lockers. Slope tops cover the width of one locker frame. The proper locker must be
ordered to utilize slope tops.

L. top fillers: Top fillers cover gaps between tops of lockers. They overlap the locker
tops and can be field cut to allow for pipes, etc.

M. vertical fillers: Designed to be used in conjunction with wall angle slip joints for a
solid fit and smooth finish. The slip joint conceals any raw edges left by field cutting.

N. zee bases: Zee bases raise lockers without legs 100 mm off the floor when there is
no concrete or wood base. They provide a toe space in the front and a concealed
flange for floor anchoring at the rear. They are available in different lengths and can
be cut to meet individual needs. Zee bases cannot be used on welded lockers.

1.06 SUBMITTALS

A. The Contractor shall submit to the Royal Commission, under the provisions of
SECTION 01330, the following items for review and approval before commencing
Work:

1. Product Data

a) Manufacturer's catalog data shall be submitted for the following items,


including material qualities, locking devices, handles, finish assembly
instructions, and other similar items.
1) Locker Materials.
2) Hardware and Accessories.

b) Samples
1) Submit 3 sets of color chips, not less than 300 x 300 mm,
representing the full range of standard colors available from the
selected manufacturer.

c) Certificates
1) Certificates, from the manufacturer, showing lockers will be free of
defects in materials, fabrication, finish, and installation, and that
they will remain so for a period of not less than 10 years after
completion.

2. Installation Methods

a) Prior to submittal of the Shop Drawings, submit 3 copies of the


manufacturer's currently recommended installation methods, showing all
required anchorage, blocking and bracing.

3. Shop Drawings

a) Drawings shall include complete locker and bench layout, confirmed


field dimensions, elevations and anchorage details, showing all required
blocking and bracing.

b) Fabrication Drawings shall be submitted for lockers consisting of


fabrication and assembly details to be performed in the factory.

c) Installation Drawings shall be submitted for lockers indicating the locker


type, location, locker-number sequence, and installation details.

1.07 QUALITY CONTROL

A. The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop and
propose programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specified
quality to the approval of the Royal Commission in accordance with
SECTION 01450.

B. Field Measurements

1. To ensure proper fits, field measurements shall be taken prior to the


preparation of drawings and fabrication.

C. Field Tests

1. The Royal Commission may request performance-characteristic tests on


assembled lockers. Tests and results shall conform to applicable codes.
Lockers not conforming shall be rejected.

D. Qualifications

1. Qualifications of Manufacturers

a) Products used in the work of this Section shall be produced by


manufacturers regularly engaged in manufacture of similar items and
with a history of successful production acceptable to the Royal
Commission.

2. Qualifications of Installers

a) The Contractor shall use adequate number of skilled workmen who are
thoroughly trained and experienced in the necessary crafts and who are
completely familiar with the specified requirements and the methods
needed for proper performance of work.

3. The Contractor’s site supervisor(s) shall have knowledge of referenced


standards and at least 5 years of documented experience.

E. Internal Quality Control

1. The Contractor’s internal quality control shall include but not be limited to:

a) Checking supplier's test certificates and certificates of compliance to


specification and referenced standards prior to assembly or installation.

b) Checking supplier’s delivery tickets of each delivery for completeness


and compliance with supply order and specification.

F. Quality Assurance

1. Quality Marking

a) Mark each unit of lockers with fabricator's identification and grade mark,
located on surfaces which will not be exposed after installation.

2. Hardware Standard

a) Hardware standard shall comply with ANSI/BHMA A156.9.

G. Mock-Ups

1. The Contractor shall install at project site a job mock-up using acceptable
products and manufacturer approved installation methods and obtain the
Royal Commission’s acceptance of finish color, texture and pattern and
workmanship standard.

2. Maintain mock-up during construction for workmanship comparison and


remove and legally dispose of mock-up when no longer required.

3. Mock-up may be incorporated into final construction upon the Royal


Commission’s approval.

H. Pre-lnstallation Meetings

1. The Contractor shall conduct pre-installation meeting to verify project


requirements, substrate conditions, manufacturer's installation instructions and
manufacturer's warranty requirements.

1.08 HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

A. All works undertaken in relation to this Specification are to be completed in full


accordance with the respective health and safety requirements established by the
following:

1. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

a) Legislation, Regulation, Standards and Codes.

2. Royal Commission Regulations

a) Standards, Contractual Conditions, and Health and Safety Systems.

3. Contractor

a) Health and Safety Standards and Systems as accepted by the Royal


Commission.

B. In the absence of any of the above, best accepted industry practice shall be
employed throughout.

1.09 JOB CONDITIONS

A. The Contractor shall not deliver metal lockers until building is enclosed and ready for
locker installation.

1.10 WARRANTY

A. Provide manufacturer's standard 15 years warranty against breakage, corrosion, and


delamination under normal use conditions.

1.11 DELIVERY, HANDLING AND STORAGE

A. The Contractor shall deliver, handle and store equipment and material units in
accordance with SECTIONS 01650 and 01660, as well as the following
requirements:

1. Deliver and handle all lockers and benches in such a manner as to prevent
damage to the material and finish.

2. Materials shall be delivered in their original packages, containers, or bundles


bearing the brand name and the name of the material.

3. Materials shall be protected from weather, soil, and damage during delivery,
storage, and construction.

4. Store all lockers in a vertical position, above ground and in a dry place.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 GENERAL

A. All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when
available, from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products
manufactured out-of-Kingdom must be approved by the Royal Commission.

B. The Contractor shall provide all metal lockers from a single manufacturer.

2.02 MATERIALS

A. Steel Sheet

1. Steel sheet used for the fabrication of lockers shall be cold-rolled, commercial-
quality material conforming to ASTM A568M. Sheet thickness shall be as
specified. Surface preparation and phosphate pretreatment of material shall be
provided as required for subsequent finishing.

B. Galvanized Steel Sheet

1. Galvanized steel sheet used for fabrication of lockers shall be hot-dipped


commercial quality minimized spangle material conforming to ASTM A653M
SS Grade 230/33, with Z180/G60 coating, stretcher leveled. Surface
preparation of material for finishing shall conform to ASTM D2092. Sheet
thickness indicated shall be the uncoated sheet-steel thickness.

C. Chromium Coating

1. Chromium coating shall be nickel and chromium electrodeposited on the


specified base metal. Coating shall conform to ASTM B456, SC-3, as
applicable to the base metal.

2.03 LOCKERS

A. General

1. Lockers shall be fabricated square, rigid, without warp, with metal faces flat
and free of distortion. Locker configurations shall be as shown on the Contract
Drawings.

2. Each locker shall have individual door, frame, top and bottom.

3. Door and frame shall be fabricated from cold rolled stretcher leveled sheet
steel and all other parts from mild cold rolled steel.

4. All steel shall be free from imperfections and capable of taking a high grade
enamel finish.

5. Hardware and accessories for locker fabrication and construction shall meet all
design specifications for referenced standards within this Section.

B. Type and Style

1. Knock-Down Lockers

a) Fabricate lockers on the unit principle, each locker with individual door
and frame, individual top, bottom, back, and shelves, with common
intermediate divisions separating compartments. Verify dimensions and
arrangement before fabrication.

2. Welded Lockers

a) Pre-assemble lockers by welding into 1 piece structures in groupings as


shown on the Contract Drawings. Welds shall be free of burrs. No bolts,
nuts, or rivets shall be allowed in assembly of main locker groups.

C. Doors

1. Doors shall be 1 piece, 1.90 mm (14 gage) steel on single and double tier
lockers with both vertical edges formed into channel shaped formation. Top
and bottom shall be flanged at 90° angle. On multiple tier lockers hinge side
shall be formed into channel shaped formation with other three sides flanged
at 90° angle.

D. Door Frames

1. Minimum 1.52 mm (16 gage) formed in a channel shape with continuous


vertical flange for door strike. Corners to be tenored and electrically welded,
making a solid and rigid 1-piece structure. Frames shall be punched for attach-
ment to the body on 255 mm centers with no exposed bolts or rivet heads on
front of frame. Center cross rails shall be on all double and triple-tier locker
frames for additional rigidity.

E. Body

1. Body of locker including tops, backs, sides, and shelves shall be 1.21 mm
(18 gage), bottoms shall be 1.52 mm (16 gage). Unless lockers are recessed,
sloping tops, in addition to flat tops are required and shall be continuous hoods
of 0.91 mm (20 gage) sheet steel up to 1650 mm maximum length per section.

2. Sides shall be flanged to give double thickness of metal at connections. Tops,


bottoms, and shelves shall be flanged all 4 sides, with channel formation at
front of shelves. Shelves shall be full depth.

3. Surface of bottom shall be flush with frame.

4. Components shall be assembled together on 225 mm centers.

5. All bolts and nuts shall be zinc plated.

F. Hinges

1. Hinges shall be 1.52 mm (16 gage) thick, 5-knuckle, tightpin style, 50 mm long
with concealed fastenings and shall be welded to frame and bolted to door with
2 bolts to each hinge.

2. Single tier lockers 1800 and 1500 mm high to have 3 hinges and 1075 mm
high to have 2 hinges; multiple tier to have 2 hinges. All hinges shall be on the
right hand side of door.

G. Locking Device

1. Single tier locking device shall engage frame at 3 points, double tier at
2 points. Channel shaped locking device shall be enclosed on 3 sides by, and
operate within, channel formation of door. Locking device shall be pre-locking
so mechanism can be locked in open position, door locking automatically when
closed. Doors to also be provided with lock-hole filler to permit use of built-in
key or combination lock.

H. Built-In Locks

1. Built-in key locks shall be as per schedule. Dead bolt shall be cast-brass alloy.
Tumblers shall be 5-disk or 5-pin type. Provide 2 keys for each lock and
3 master keys. Keys shall be delivered in a key case with each key set
identified by lock and locker number, OR

2. Built-in combination locks shall be as per schedule. Combination locks shall be


master key controlled. Three master keys shall be delivered in a key case.

I. Door Handles

1. On single and double tier lockers, all parts shall be chrome-plated, die-cast
zinc alloy. No moving parts are to operate against outside surface of locker.
Padlock attachment to be integral part of lift which shall be attached directly to
locking bar and protected by fixed handle housing. Handle to provide built-in
padlock strike. Triple tier and other multiple tier lockers shall be equipped with
a 1.52 mm (16 gage) door pull with padlock attachment when not used with
built-in locks.

J. Louvers

1. Doors shall be louvered at top and bottom for ventilation. Single tier and
double tier lockers shall have 6 louvers at top and bottom. Triple tier lockers
shall have 3 louvers at top and bottom.

K. Number Plates

1. Each locker shall have polished aluminum number plate with black etched or
embossed numerals not less than 9.5 mm high. Plates shall be attached to
doors with pop rivets. Lockers shall be numbered as shown on the Contract
Drawings. Numbers shall be in both Arabic and English with the Arabic above
or to the right of English.

L. Interior Equipment

1. Provide a shelf 250 to 300 mm from top of locker, full width of locker. Omit
shelf on multiple tier lockers.

2. Provide 3 single prong wall hooks and 1 double prong ceiling hook. Hooks
shall be 6 mm round, cadmium plated and attached with 2 bolts or rivets.

M. Legs

1. Front legs shall be a 150 mm continuation of the vertical frame members.


Locker shoes shall be provided to adjust for floor unevenness. Rear legs shall
be adjustable. Closed front and end bases shall be provided for spaces
between legs. As an alternate, and when detailed on the Contract Drawings
lockers shall be provided without legs for setting on raised concrete or tile
bases.

N. Closed Locker Bases

1. Closed locker base shall be 150 mm high with edges flanged inward. Bases
shall be continuous in length and placed in a plane flush with the locker
surfaces. Bases shall be provided for all surfaces exposed-to-view. Closed
locker bases shall be fabricated from not less than 1.5 mm thick steel sheet.

O. Trim

1. Provide 0.9 mm thick trim including fillers, clips, splice plates, sloping tops, etc.
Finishes of trim shall match the body of the lockers.

P. Sloping Locker Tops

1. Sloping locker tops shall be provided in addition to the locker-section flat tops.
Sloping tops shall be continuous in length. Fillers or closures shall be provided
at the exposed end of sloping tops. Sloping tops shall be fabricated from not
less than 1.21 mm (18 gage) thick steel sheet.

Q. Sloped Hood

1. Sloped hood shall be made of 1.21 mm (18 gage) steel, slope rise equal to 1/3
of the locker depth (18°), plus a 25 mm vertical rise at front.

2.04 BENCHES

A. Length and width of the benches shall be as shown on the Contract Drawings.
Overall height shall be 450 mm.

B. The Contractor shall provide benches from either of the following as approved by the
Royal Commission:

1. Tops shall be:

a) 30 mm thick clear hardwood, OR

b) 30 mm thick laminated hardwood supported by steel standards, spaced


on not more than 1800 mm centers, OR

c) 38 mm thick solid molded polymer plastic with edges rounded to 6 mm


radius, with self-lubricating surface that resists marks from writing
instruments and homogenous color throughout. Plastic shall be either
high density polyethylene, or 100% recycled pre-consumer
polyethylene.

2. Pedestals shall be:

a) PVC plastic, OR

b) Painted steel, OR

c) Anodized aluminum, OR

d) Steel tubing with 3.42 mm (10 gage) steel flanges welded to each end,
OR

e) Stainless steel free-standing pedestals 50 mm diameter brushed


1.52 mm (16 gage) stainless steel formed into a trapezoid, AND

f) Stainless steel Phillips head screws shall be used as fasteners.

2.05 FINISHES

A. Baked Enamel for Lockers

1. All exposed steel parts shall be thoroughly cleaned, given a bonding and rust
inhibitive phosphate treatment, and then electro-statically sprayed with a heavy
coat of high quality enamel. Enamel shall be baked at 177 to 204°C and must
withstand a rigid hammer test without clipping or flaking. Colors shall be as
shown on the Finish Schedule.

B. Powder Coat Paint Finish for Lockers

1. Dry thickness shall be 0.025 to 0.03 mm (1 to 1.2 mils).

2. Colors shall be as shown on the Finish Schedule.

C. Finish for Benches

1. Wooden bench tops shall be finished with 3 coats of plastic sealer. Finish of
standards shall be same color as lockers, except for stainless steel pedestals.

D. Touch-Up Paint

1. The Contractor shall obtain from the locker manufacturer touch-up paint for
each color of lockers furnished. No separate payment will be made for this
paint.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 EXAMINATION

A. Verify that prepared bases are in correct position and configuration.

B. Verify bases and embedded anchors are properly sized.

3.02 INSTALLATION

A. The Contractor shall:

1. Assemble locker components in groups as indicated on the Contract Drawings


and as per manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Secure lockers to wall or floor as recommended by the manufacturer.

3. Install lockers plumb, straight and aligned.

4. Bolt adjoining locker units together to provide a rigid installation. Install end
panels, filler panels, and sloped tops.

5. Install accessories.

6. Replace components that do not operate smoothly.

B. Install benches where and as shown on the Contract Drawings. Secure to floor, being
careful not to penetrate waterproof membrane. Refer to Contract Drawings for
location of membrane relative to finish floor surface.

3.03 ADJUSTMENT

A. Upon completion of installation, inspect lockers and adjust as necessary for proper
door and locking mechanism operation.

3.04 CLEAN-UP

A. The Contractor shall:

1. Touch-up scratch marks and abrasions with paint furnished by the locker
manufacturer.

2. Remove and replace damaged units.

3. Clean lockers inside and out.

4. Surfaces of the work and adjacent surfaces soiled as a result of the work shall
be cleaned in an approved manner.

5. Equipment, surplus materials, and rubbish from the work shall be removed

from the site.

3.05 PROTECTION

A. Protect lockers from damage and defacement until final acceptance.
