MMA: The Art of Combat and Hype

MMA, or mixed martial arts, is a combat sport that combines different fighting styles like wrestling, boxing, jiu-jitsu, and muay thai. The UFC is the major promotion organization that holds MMA fights across various weight classes, with champions like Alexander Volkanovski, Jon Jones, and Zhang Weili. Fighters in the UFC are independent contractors who must promote themselves to gain attention and rise in the rankings in pursuit of championship belts, since being entertaining is as important as winning in order to stay on the UFC roster. MMA tests fighters physically and mentally as they are pushed to their limits in front of millions.

MMA is the greatest combat sport in the world. It's an art.

A violent yet beautiful art that displays

strength, discipline and the double edged sword of a person’s capabilities. Today I will show you
some of the current champions in the UFC and other fighters to take a look into what the MMA
Community is like.

MMA, or mixed martial arts mixes up various styles of fighting to see who comes out on top.
MMA contains mixes between arts like Wresting, Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Muay Thai.
This means someone who mainly wrestles can compete against someone who mainly does
kickboxing. Most MMA fighters now days are very well rounded and the standards for skill are
very high. These are people trained to take down and submit or knock out another person.

Let’s talk about the organization that comes to mind when talking about MMA, the UFC. The
United Fighting Championship is a fight promotion like the NBA, F1, Champions League where
it’s a company that holds MMA fights. The UFC has been around since 1993. Where they held
their first event which was completely different compared to what the UFC is today. Back in
1993, it was a one night tournament where one man fought to the top. Today it’s like any other
combat sport format where it’s a card with multiple different matchups and weight classes and
belts.

There are 12 weight classes in the UFC; Women’s Strawweight, Flyweight, Bantamweight,
Featherweight and Men’s Flyweight, Bantamweight, Featherweight, Lightweight, Welterweight,
Middleweight, Light-Heavyweight and Heavyweight. Each of these weight classes have a belt at
the top that a fighter holds.

Some of today’s champions are Alexander Volkanovski, Jon Jones, Sean O’Malley and Zhang
Weili. {ELABORATE ON EACH FIGHTER}

Now one thing that’s interesting about fighters in the UFC is that they are completely
independent contractors. They sign a contract for a number of fights and their total payout for
each of these fights. They have their own managers, agents, coaches and gyms. The UFC
doesn’t help you with stardom unless you make it for yourself. Being as good on the mic in a
conference is just as important as being in the cage. This means that more drama creates more
fight hype for fighters. And since many of these fight cards are pay-per-view the fighters bring in
their own money by gaining attraction. Fight hype also helps you get promoted and rise in your
weight-classes rankings. Ranking helps you get closer to the belt and eventually fight for it. One
important thing to keep in mind is you can’t be a champion by being boring. The UFC gets most
of its revenue off of fans and if they think you don’t bring enough hype and eyes to your fights
and you aren’t succeeding; you’re cut from the roster. This means you have to finish your
opponents, hunt or be hunted, getting decision wins after uneventful fights won’t get you any
traction in rankings or hype. Knock outs and submissions will. You have to be entertaining while
you’re pushed to your limits.

MMA is a sport where you feel alive. You feel the realest feeling you’ve ever felt; Pain. You get
tested in front of millions of eyes while you’re getting punched, kicked, and slammed and have
to focus on defeating your opponent in an entertaining way or get hurt badly. It’s a high risk high
reward sport that I love because it makes you feel real and alive. It humbles you and it
disciplines you. It’s a barbaric sport that has so much more than what meets the eye.
