MECHATRONICS
1. What is mechatronics ?
Mechatronics is a technology combining mechanics, electronics, computing
and new information and communication technologies (such as the internet).
The combination of these different areas makes it possible to think about a
product differently, from its design to recycling and maintenance. The aim of
mechatronics is to create increasingly intelligent components and solutions
that communicate with each other, to meet customer demands for excellence
and enable the deployment of the factory of the future.
Examples of mechatronic systems include:
- a modern motor vehicle,
- fighter jet,
- ABS, ESP,
- power steering,
- a numerically controlled machine tool,
- autofocus,
- hard drives,
- instrumented ball bearings,
- “smart” washing machines,
Advantages
The strength of mechatronics ultimately lies in its adaptability to juggle both
relatively small applications and much larger applications. Ultimately, it
remains close to sciences such as physics and chemistry to the extent that it
is a mastery of several technologies that we try to assemble together to bring
new functionalities to products that could not work independently.
2. Jobs of mechatronics engineer
There are many professions linked to mechatronics and some are even being
created as industry 4.0 develops. By combining new technologies,
mechatronics generates new challenges, thus creating specific professions.
There is a constant need for mechatronics in the job market and more
specifically for mechatronics engineers specialized in the following fields:
R&D, the production, Development, industrialization of components, the sales,
marketing,
The positions sought are multiple and generally concentrate:
industrial designers and constructors, mechatronics engineer, physics lab
workers, R&D engineer, polymechanics, automation, specialists, engineer in
design office, electronic engineers, polymechanics, applications engineer,
production mechanics, etc
3. Skills and qualities
In terms of qualities, the engineer must have a great open mind to mobilize
teams from diverse disciplines and unite them around a common project. It is
of course necessary to master solid skills in mechanics, electronics, IT and
automation. Of course, the mechatronics engineer necessarily has a field that
he likes more than another, but it is above all the ability to combine all his
disciplines that makes the difference. Proficiency in CAD software is expected,
as is technical English.
4. Training to become a mechatronics engineer.
It is possible to enter the profession at Bac +5 level with an engineering
diploma specializing in mechatronics. Certain master's degrees awarded by
universities are also appreciated by employers, such as the Mechanics and
Sciences master's degree for engineers specializing in mechatronics or the
professional master's degree in mechanical and civil engineering, automation,
robotics, mechatronics specialty.
5 What are the missions of a mechatronics engineer?
The main missions of a mechatronics engineer are to ensure all stages of
connected system design. This includes :
-conduct research to improve the performance, quality and safety of
-equipment;
-set up test phases;
-create prototypes;
-analyze performance and quality results;
-make the necessary technical adjustments;
-determine the modes of production;
ensure maintenance if he works directly on the industrial site;
advise and support the technical and production teams;
draw up a use and maintenance protocol for the customer.
