All I did in 16 weeks in 800 words..
Part 1:
About 12 weeks ago, we were asked to talk about a social issue. I decided that I was
going to talk about making equality happen with regards to racism in modern society. I chose this
topic because it just constantly sat in the back of my mind about how unfair it really is, but I
wasn’t continuously acting on that thought in all the ways I thought I could. Doing the amount of
work and research into one topic, I learned at least five new things each time, which surprised
me really. Of course, my perspective changed over time but in an informational way, doing this
research taught me how to be part of the change. The sources that really shaped my thinking
were organizational websites with different types and formats of information, like this one (this
is also found in my informational effect project regarding more information).
I decided to go with the mediums I chose because I found it to be more appealing. When
doing my flash memoir, I went with more of an essay because I was storytelling. When writing
my profile, I went with an essay and a photo essay so that readers could hear the story but also
see the story. This was the same for my persuasive effect as well as my informational effect
projects. This was the same for most of my projects because it comes across more appealing but
also allows my readers to see two perspectives, it worked well with all my projects.
Each project we got to pick what we wanted to do. For example we could choose an
essay, a photo essay, audio, etc. Depending on what I wanted to do, I would build off of multiple
things, I will explain this more in the next paragraph. I learned that you could make anything
with the type of information you have, with that being said, I was able to build and revise to
make something new.
For me I found being able to revise our work helpful, it helped shape my projects. At first
I didn’t understand why we were spending so much time revising our projects but again it helped
me so much in the long run. They were oftentimes simple mistakes but changed the whole
project. It was nice to have more than one person peer review your project because you saw two
different views. You were able to build off their thoughts which made it all come together. In my
profile effect project, I revised twice, the first time completely starting over. Making the design
was the fun part, you got to be creative and make it exactly like you want. I decided to go with
this design because I wanted people to enjoy what they saw which would encourage my readers
to take action.
At the beginning of this, I wasn’t sure what goals to set so I wasn’t doing it correctly. I
still am unsure, but I did know I wanted it to be well done and displayed as I spent this whole
course on this project. I would say, I did well! I was able to achieve this because of the revisions
we completed, the amount of discussions asking for advice, replying to so many other students,
giving and receiving feedback. Goals I have set for myself now for future courses and myself as
a writer is to make the change, always look twice, make a plan and most importantly ask for help
but also help others. As a citizen, I thank myself for being part of the change and hope to inspire
more people everyday. I hope that my readers find them as educational as I did.
Part 2:
We had two big ideas coming into this course: “Language and writing are resources people
use to do things, be things and make things in the world,” and “Rhetoric provides a method
for studying the work that language and writing do.” My first idea to me means exactly what
it says, language and writing is our main source (communication), this allows us access to so
much. The second big idea means that persuasive writing is a tool for us to understand language
and writing and their capabilities when used properly.
I have used these two concepts in my project every time. By doing the research, putting
everything together allowed me to communicate everything. I was able to present multiple ideas
in one big idea, the magazine. I have had to use these two big ideas in another setting, my other
classes. I had to use these two big ideas to help create a better piece in a different course. These
allowed me to think outside the box, and use these skills elsewhere.
