Social stratification is the categorization of people in a society into ranking of socioeconomic tiers based
on many factor such power, prestige, education, wealth , race and career. There are four system of
stratification which includes estate system, caste, slavery and class system. The caste system is a system
of stratification in which an individual is born into a given social standing, and remain in for their whole
life. There is no social mobility example is Hindu caste tradition. Class system is a system where the
individuals are ranked based on social, economic factor and individual achievement. The system is
characterized by social mobility. Example is meritocracy. Slavery system: this ranking based on enforce
servitude. People were mostly enslaved based on race thus leading to social stratification system.
Example is chattel slavery in the US. Lastly, Estate system: this is stratification in which one inherit their
social position which is defined by estate system. For example, nobles inherit their title while peasant
are born in subservient position. Slavery, estate, and caste are considered closed system because there
is no mobility while class system is open stratification system because it is characterized by mobility.
These systems reflect either ascribed or achieved status. Caste and slavery is reflect ascribed status
because one is born in a given social standing it inherit it from the society. Class system reflect achieved
status this is because someone earn their status base on their achievement.
According to Karl Marx, production is t the means of production refers to a system where working
provide labor for the ruling class which causes a conflict of unequal distribution of wealth in society. Karl
Marx argue that means of production in a society is controlled by the bourgeoisie. This is because the
bourgeoisie are investing in venture while the proletariat are the working class in the society.
Bourgeoisie was also known as capitalist class which control the wealth of a given society, they control
means of production reap big from the venture while proletariats are the working class which use their
labor to produce goods. The relationship between bourgeois and proletariat; bourgeois are related to
production in that they control and owns the production in a society while the proletariat is related o
production in that they provide the labor for production, they work for wages and doesn’t own any part
of means of production. Bourgeoisie always over exploit the proletariat to increase their wealth. Class
consciousness is awareness of individuals own class and economic rank in a society and they are aware
that they are being exploited. False consciousness is thinking that prevent the individual from
acknowledging their social and economic status in a society, most them grasp values, attitude and
beliefs that favors the capitalist and they are not aware of exploitation by capitalist. Dominant ideology
according to Karl Marx is the control over way people think in a society. Marx claim that the ideology of
the capitalist were presented as natural and common sense thus being accepted by the working class.
Class according to weber is a group of individuals that share common social status like education,
income, wealth. This means that individual have varying access to means of production and level of
resources as categorized by weber. Weber views education as valuable resource that could make
someone to advance its social status in a society while Marx don’t. Status group: is people who are at
the level of social status and share same level of prestige in a society. People are placed in their
respective groups based on their education and occupation. Lastly, Party: Weber argued that party could
be employed as tool for individuals that could organize and group together to increase their access to
resources, thus parties could be organized and arranged to improve social change. Weber views social
class as people who have the same economic interests and occupations while Marx doesn't consider
social class have the same share of consciousness.
Culture is linked to class differences for the culture capital not evenly distributed through all classes in
our society. Individuals from the upper or dominant class have higher priority because they define their
culture as the dominant culture in a society while the culture of the of the lower class individual is
considered less dominant and is not pursued and achieved in the society. The working class have a
minimum access rate to cultural, social and material resources because they are far away from the
dominant culture. Culture capital is also linked to power differences due to culture capital can be
transferred to power and wealth; it can be achieved through education. Cultural capital influenced social
recognition and acquisition of culture capital will lead to social and economic advantages. Cultural
capital is connected with information, how to use sports, how to consume food and how to wear our
attire. Most of the attire, housing, vacation, food and sport that are expressed are of the upper class
division, thus it is lifestyle and social advantage for the upper class.
