How to Tie a Square Knot

Overview:
Tying a square knot is simple and fun, though it can seem confusing at first. The
instructions below will guide you through the process in eight beginner-friendly
steps.

You Will Need:

 A piece of string measuring 8 inches.

Instructions:
Step 1: Use both hands to pick up each end of the string so that your thumb is
pressing the string against your pointer and middle fingers.

Step 2: Cross the end of the string in your left hand over the end of the string in
your right hand.
Note: This will create a “circle” shape in the string.
Step 3: Using your pointer finger, loop the same string you moved in Step 2
underneath the “circle.”

Step 4: Using both hands, pull the ends (“tails”) of the string outwards so that
there is at least 2 ½ inches of room for the next knot.
Step 5: Take the right tail and cross it over the left tail.
Note: This will create a smaller “circle.”

Step 6: Take the same tail from Step 5 and tuck it into the smaller “circle.”

Step 7: Pull on the tails until a knot forms.

Step 8: Make sure the knot is tight by pulling on the tails until the knot is fully
closed.
