Unit 1
● It's important to teach and incorporate technology to prepare students to live and work in
a world that requires tech knowledge, creativity, collaboration, communication, and
critical thinking.
● Using other tools instead of textbooks to teach about a topic (such as Google maps or
Google search) can help students become more engaged in learning.
● Starting with your objectives for the lesson can help when deciding which online tool to
use to enhance your teaching, make sure it aligns with the goal of the lesson and doesn’t
distract from it.
Unit 2
● For help with tools on Google, use Google help center for step-by-step guides.
● A PLN is a great way to connect with other educators, get ideas for all kinds of things
related to teaching (lessons, classroom organization, behavior management, etc.), stay
inspired, receive encouragement, and enhance your professional development; joining a
google educator group can be a part of this.
● The Google for education directory can be useful when you need to connect with an
expert in a specific location or who can help with your school or classroom specifically.
Unit 3
● Using Google Drive to create folders organized by class or subject is a great way to
organize all the materials and lessons you need for that specific class or subject,
especially because they are easily transferable and accessible.
● Google forms can help you easily create assessments for your students (whether
formative or summative), they are easy to make and send out to students, and the
responses are collected automatically, summarized, and all in one place. You can even
embed images and videos into the assessment form.
● Use Google Classroom to assign work to students and limit the amount of paper
assignments. You can also make announcements. It provides various tools and allows for
grading and feedback on an individual basis too.
Unit 4
● Gmail provides a translating tool that allows you to translate messages between
languages which would be very helpful for communicating with families whose primary
language isn’t English (it lets them know they are worth the time and in general may help
communication between the teacher and the family).
● Color coding your Gmail labels can help you find groups/types of emails quickly. Also,
labels help keep large numbers of emails organized and easy to find.
● Google Chat allows you to message anyone in the world, and you can start live videos
too. It could be used to give quicker answers to student questions (as opposed to having
to receive and send lots of emails all the time).
Unit 5
● Google Calendar has features to help you stay organized, such as creating multiple
separate calendars (maybe one for school planning and one for personal life) and sharing
calendars with others (great for collaborating with other teachers, with students’ families,
or again for personal life with family/friends).
● Using Google Keep to create to-do lists can help you stay organized and on top of things
because it has the feature of sending reminders when an item is due.
● In Google Calendar, you can view your calendars in various ways (day, week, month,
year), which can help you stay focused on a certain period of time, or help you look far
ahead. This would be nice to switch around depending on the purpose of the calendar or
whether or not it’s a busy time for you.
Unit 6
● Google Meet makes meetings more efficient and easier to remember and join for teachers
who are always busy. You can set reminders and simply join online instead of going in
person, which makes it easier to work into everyone’s schedule.
● Using Google meet would also be helpful for meeting with students. If a student misses
class, needs tutoring or extra help, or needs to talk with a teacher for another reason, a
virtual meeting could be set up that is efficient and easy to fit into schedules.
● The idea of using Google meet to talk with a professional or famous person that relates to
the area students are learning about would be really cool. It would increase engagement,
help them practice interviewing/questioning/listening skills, and connect the content to
real life even more.
Unit 7
● Google Classroom allows you to create virtual classrooms and organize by class,
including rosters, announcements, resources, assignments, grades, feedback, and more. ·
As a student, it’s nice to have everything in one place.
● Using Classroom makes it easy for students to check their assignments and due dates, as
well as find necessary resources or other information and announcements.
● You can assign digitally created assignments without having to print out a bunch of paper
copies. Students can make a digital copy and submit their individual work.
Unit 8
● Google Sheets would be a simple and efficient way to keep a gradebook, and it’s nice
because it’s online and accessible anywhere and can easily be updated at any time.
● Sheets can be used to order data by size, and formulas can be put in to automatically
calculate averages and other useful data points; data can also be organized into charts for
easier analysis.
● Google Sheets is a good way to track student progress over time.
Unit 9
● There are three important pieces to an efficient search: using the right terms,
understanding your results, and narrowing your search.
● This unit is one you might complete with your students, or at least summarize for them,
since research becomes a common practice especially as students head into middle school
and through high school.
● Teach students the rule of three, which means comparing three sources on a piece of
information to increase confidence in its validity.
Unit 10
● Instead of just putting links on slides for interactive parts of lessons, make them a
clickable link like you can in Google docs to improve the quality of your slide.
● Using the runs offline filter would be really helpful to find resources for students that you
need them to use outside of class, since not all students may have Wi-Fi all the time.
● Google Earth would be fun to use for virtual tours or to enhance learning about a subject
(probably a location, environment, or culture); the search and knowledge card feature
would help enrich learning as well.
Unit 11
● Filtering your results when searching for educational videos on YouTube can help you
find what you’re looking for more quickly.
● YouTube allows you to collect videos into a playlist, which can then be shared with your
students (good for a unit or topic collection)
● Use subtitles for ELL students or to help improve comprehension of a video in general.
Unit 12
● Using Google Docs (or Slides, Sheets, etc.) for collaborative projects works well because
all students can edit the document at the same time.
● I like thinking about how using these kinds of online collaborative tools can be helpful
for students who are more shy or reluctant to speak up in class. This way they can still
collaborate, share ideas, and contribute without experiencing as much social anxiety.
● Look at version history on Google docs to see how much each student contributed to the
group project.
Unit 13
● For younger students, it’s a good idea to keep a password list since they often forget their
passwords and this is easier than having to reset them so often.
● Instill good password creation from a young age. Teach students to make passwords
complex yet something they will remember, and remind them to never share passwords.
● Don't adopt the mindset that students are just good with technology nowadays and don’t
need much instruction in it. It’s still very important to teach them about resources and
how to be responsible and safe online citizens.
