Unit 2.2 – Animals in Stories

Suffixes (-ful, ly)
To figure out a new word, look for suffix, or word added to the end of the
word.
-ful = “full of” colorful (full of colors)
--ly = in a “way that is” gladly (in a way that is glad)
Grammar Singular and Plural Nouns
A singular noun names one person, place, or thing.
A plural noun names more than one person, place, or thing.
Add -s to form the plural of most singular nouns.
Add -es to form the plural of singular nouns that end in s, ch, sh, or x.
To form the plural of nouns ending with a consonant and „y‟, change „y‟ to
„i‟ and add –es.
Examples:
Singular: farm → Plural: farms.
Singular: wish → Plural: wishes
Singular: baby → Plural: babies

Use commas to separate three or more words in a series.
The words “and” or “or” come before the last word in a series.

Multiple-meaning words have more than one meaning. Use other words in
the sentence to figure out which meaning is being used.

A common noun names any person, place, or thing.
A proper noun names a special person, place, or thing.
A proper noun begins with a capital letter
Examples: Many frogs live on the banks of the Mississippi River.
A collective noun names a group of people, places, or things.
Examples: a flock of sheep; a school of fish

The name of each day, month, or holiday begins with a capital letter.

A simile compares two unlike things. It uses the word like or as to make the
comparison.
Examples: The people are as busy as bees.

Most nouns add –s or –es to make their plural form.
Some nouns change their spelling to make their plural form.

Some words stay the same.

A compound word is a word made of two smaller words. The compound
word “sunset” is made of the words sun and set.
Examples: “afternoon” = after + noon
Grammar Use a comma between the names of a city and state.
Examples: Buffalo, New York Orlando, Florida
A possessive noun shows who or what has something.
Add an apostrophe („) and –s to a singular noun to make it possessive.
Examples: I walk my friend‟s dog. = I walk the dog of my friend.
The fish‟s bowl is round. = The bowl of the fish is round.
Add an apostrophe to most plural nouns to make them possessive.
Examples: The bears‟ cages were clean.
Add an apostrophe and –s to plural nouns that do not end in s.
Examples: The children‟s books are on the table.
