2017 ct2

(1) The document provides information about a structural engineering design exam, including two questions about pre-stressed concrete beams. (2) Question 1 asks about IRC class B loading, calculating bending moment in a concrete slab culvert, and designing the culvert slab for flexure. (3) Question 2 asks about advantages of pre-stressed concrete over reinforced concrete, and describes one system for anchoring tendons in post-tensioned pre-stressed concrete structures.

8th Semester (Civil) Class Test – II - 2017 -:: 2 ::-

Subject: STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING DESIGN – IV
Time: 2 Hrs. Maximum Marks: 40 (c) The cross section of a simply supported pre-stressed
concrete beam of span 5.0 m is 200 mm x 400 mm. The
Note: Part (a) is compulsory in each question and carries (02) marks; beam is subjected to its self weight and an imposed load

span and at end sections, if the pre-stressing force is 300


Q. 1. (a) When is IRC Class B loading used? (02)
(b) Compute the maximum factored bending moment at the
centre of span of a reinforced concrete slab culvert of
clear span 5.5 m on a National Highway, for a two lane
carriageway, for two lanes of IRC class A loading. The
clear width of road may be taken as 7.5 m. Assume slab
thickness as 550 mm; average thickness of wearing coat =
75 mm; width of kerbs = 0.6 m; width of supports = 0.4
m. (18)
(c) Design the deck slab for flexure, in a reinforced concrete
slab culvert of clear span 5.5 m on a National Highway,
for a two lane carriageway, for one lane of IRC class AA
(tracked vehicle) loading. The clear width of road may be
taken as 7.5 m. Assume slab thickness as 550 mm;
average thickness of wearing coat = 75 mm; width of
kerbs = 0.6 m; width of supports = 0.4 m. (18)
Q. 2. (a) Give two important advantages of pre-stressed concrete
structures over reinforced concrete structures? (02)
(b) Describe any one system of anchoring tendons, in post
tensioned pre-stressed concrete structures? (18)
