Weatherford’s Electric Submersible Pumping Systems
ESP Training Program
Course Outline
Introduction
The ESP training program is designed to provide CNPC personnel with an understanding of
how an ESP operates in an oilfield environment. The course will teach the participants how to
design an ESP using hand calculations followed by use an instruction in Subpump software.
The training will also include field operation and installation techniques.
Course Objectives
At the end of the training course the participant should be able to:
• List and describe all the surface and subsurface components of an ESP system
• Demonstrate how to calculate the Total Dynamic Head (TDH), head per stage and
HP per stage
• Demonstrate how to size and select an ESP for a fixed speed application with the aid
of the pump performance curves
• Demonstrate how to size and select the ESP using Subpump software for a fixed
speed and variable speed application
• Describe the effects of gas, solids, viscous fluids and other non desirable reservoir
conditions on an ESP
• Describe how changing reservoir conditions may impact pump performance and how
to design the ESP in anticipation of these changes
• Describe and discuss basic ESP handling, lifting, installation and operational
techniques
