IELTS - Writing Task 1

The document provides tips for summarizing linear and cyclical processes in 3 sentences or less. It suggests including language to indicate whether the process repeats itself or has a definitive end, and gives examples of phrases to denote the start and end points as well as the steps of the process. Breaking the process into groups of stages and using transition words are also recommended to improve description of a process flow.

Linear or Cyclical process?

Some common ideas to show cycle:

a) After this stage, the process repeats itself with the first step
of …
b) Hereafter, the entire process repeats.
c) This is the last step of the process __ after which, the first
step of ___ gets repeated making the entire process cyclical.

Some common ideas to show linear:

a) With this step, the cycle comes to an end, showing a linear
nature.
b) ___ is the last step in the process (of ___) and the cycle of
___ ends.
c) With the last step of ___, the ___ is reached the end.
d) After the penultimate stage/step ___, the (last step).
Identify the START and END

Mention these (with or without the number of steps) in the

overall.
If you are unable to count the number of steps, it is OKAY. Do
not stress. Simple mention:
a) The process consists of multiple/many steps which start with
__ and end with ___.
b) The ___ process begins with ___ and ends at ___, thereby
showing multiple steps/stages.
c) The ___ marks the beginning of the process/(name of the
process). The last step is ___.
Can you break down the process or group the stages?
Remember: the ability to group can help you form better
sentences. It can also help you to decide on paragraph division.

For instance:
a) By addition of limestone and clay to the crusher, a powder is
obtained, and mixed, which is passed to the rotating heater.
b) After the milking machine finishes milking of cows, the
collected milk is either stored in cold storages or transported
to dairy, every day.
c) The milk collected with the use of milking machines is put
in either of two uses: (a) cold storage or (b) every day
delivery of milk by milk tanker.

How to break down the process?

 Use the image divisions
 On the basis of reverse order
 On the basis of different direction of movement (of product
or steps)
 Bifurcation of product or output
 Raw material or work-in progress
Some common sentence ideas for processes:
 After heating of the bricks, they are left to cool down and
get packed.
 Before being dried in the drying oven for 1 or 2 days, the
cutting of bricks using a wire cutter or shaping by mould
takes place.
 Before being dried in the drying oven for 1 or 2 days, the
cutting of bricks using a wire cutter or shaping by mould is
done.
 Before being dried in the drying oven for 1 or 2 days, the
bricks are cut using a wire cutter or shaped by mould.
 The penultimate step/stage is packaging of bricks, followed
by delivery to the destination.
 The penultimate (second last) step/stage consists of
pasteurizing the milk and packaging it. After this, it is put on
shelves of super markets and stores for sales.
Some tips to save time and reduce stress:

 Properly write down every step and detail that you

understand.
 Try to best mention what you do not understand.
 Do not omit any detail and description given in the image.
Again follow first two tips for this.
 Try to include “accurate grammar variety” by perfecting
some sentence structures like
o (a) either or,
o (b) as well as
o (c) either,
o (d) as well
 Try to perfectly use words like
o (a) after ___,
o (b) before ___,
o (c) subsequently,
o (d) following ___,
o (e) simultaneously,
o (f) Along with ___ [can be slightly tricky and suitable
only when two simultaneous steps are mentioned]
