Carbon Atom: A Unique One
Carbon atoms can form single, double
or triple bonds with other carbon atoms.
Carbon can form up to 4 bonds- has 4
valence electrons
This allows carbon atoms to form long
chains, almost unlimited in length.
Has the ability to form millions of
different compounds with other elements
The carbon–carbon single bond is a
sigma bond and is formed between one
hybridized orbital from each of the
carbon atoms. Sigma bonds are the
strongest kind of covalent bond.
Carbon can bond with other carbons,
form straight chains, branched chains and
rings
Allotropes of Carbon
Allotropes are elements which are
chemically identical, but they differ
markedly in their physical properties.
1. Diamond- crystalline form of carbon
in which each carbon atom is bonded
strongly to four other carbon atoms.
2. Graphite- each carbon atom is
bonded tightly to three other carbon
atoms in flat layers
3. Fullerenes(buckyballs)- consists of
carbon atoms arranged in the shape
of a hollow sphere
4. Nanotube- carbon atoms are
arranged in the shape of a long
hollow cylinder
