Number Theory The Harmonic mean of 10, 10, 14, 2, 2, 5, -1, -11, 12, 11
What is Harmonic Progression? Find the 10th term of 3/8 , 3/22, 3/14, 3/17 . . . . . . .
A Harmonic Progression (HP) is defined as a sequence of real
numbers which is determined by taking the reciprocals of the
arithmetic progression that does not contain 0.
Harmonic mean is calculated as the reciprocal of the arithmetic mean
of the reciprocals.
Harmonic Progression Formula
To solve the harmonic progression problems, we should find the
corresponding arithmetic progression sum. It means that the nth term
of the harmonic progression is equal to the reciprocal of the nth term
of the corresponding A.P.
Harmonic Progression Examples
Example 1:
Determine the 4th and 8th term of the harmonic progression 6, 4,
3,…
Example 2:
Compute the 16th term of HP if the 6th and 11th term of HP are 10
and 18, respectively.
Activity No. 1
If the sum of reciprocals of first 11 terms of an HP series is
110, find the 6th term of HP.
The sixth term of an H.P. is 10 and the 11th term is 18, then
the 16th term is:
The ninth term of 1/3, 1/7, 1/11, 1/15, 1/19,……… is given by?
Fibonacci Sequence
The Fibonacci Sequence is the series of numbers where the next
number is found by adding up the two numbers before it.
Using The Golden Ratio to Calculate Fibonacci Numbers
The Rule
And even more surprising is that we can calculate any Fibonacci
The Fibonacci Sequence can be written as a "Rule" Number using the Golden Ratio:
First, the terms are numbered from 0 onwards like this:
So we can write the rule:
The answer comes out as a whole number, exactly equal to the addition
The Rule is xn = xn−1 + xn−2
of the previous two terms.
where:
Terms Below Zero
xn is term number "n"
The sequence works below zero also, like this:
xn−1 is the previous term (n−1)
xn−2 is the term before that (n−2)
Golden Ratio
In fact the sequence below zero has the same numbers as the
And here is a surprise. When we take any two successive (one after the sequence above zero, except they follow a +-+- ... pattern. It can
other) Fibonacci Numbers, their ratio is very close to the Golden
be written like this:
Ratio "φ" which is approximately 1.618034...
In fact, the bigger the pair of Fibonacci Numbers, the closer the
approximation. Let us try a few: History
Fibonacci was not the first to know about the sequence, it was known
in India hundreds of years before!
