CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The use of makeup is a ubiquitous practice in many societies worldwide,


especially among the adolescent’s demographic. The increasing popularity of beauty
trends and makeup tutorials propagated by social media flat forms has greatly
influenced the makeup habits of senior high school students. While makeup can be
tool for self-expression and creativity, its usage among teenagers has been
associated with various psychological aspects, including self-esteem. This research
aims to explore the influence of makeup usage on self-esteem among Senior High
School Students.

Different between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, highlighting the


importance of autonomy competence, and relatedness as fundamental needs, and
offering insights into fostering self-determine motivations and understanding various
forms of motivation. This theory has significant influenced our understanding of
human behavior and motivation.

Symbolic interactionism highlights the significant of symbols, such as makeup,


in shaping individual’s self-perception. It suggests that the way we use makeup can
influence how we see ourselves, as makeup symbolizes social meaning and
expectation. This perspective supports the idea that using makeup for self-
expression can help individuals shape them self-identify.

To sum up this theory after valuable into psychological and social aspects of
makeup use among Senior High School Students. They underscore the importance of
considering not only external factors but also internals motivation and self-
perception when young people use makeup. Recognizing how symbols intrinsic
motivations and self-esteem interact is essential for promoting a healthy and positive
relationship with makeup among students.
Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of wearing cosmetic


products to the self-esteem of senior high school students in Damulaan National
High School. Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:

1.What is the demographic profile of students in term of:

a. age c. socio-economic level e. grade level

b. gender d. Track/Strand f. academic performance

2.What are the commonly used of cosmetic products by senior high school students?

3.What are the reasons why the senior high school students use cosmetic products?

4.What is the impact of wearing cosmetic products to the self-esteem of students in


senior high school?

Scope and Delimitation

The goal of the study is to determine the impact of wearing cosmetic


products to the self-esteem of senior high school students in Damulaan National
High School?

And the target of this study is to determine the count of the students that
used beauty products. This study will find out the effect of Beauty products in
students through interview and observation. The result will be determined if all the
participants is willing to participate in this study. The informants will be the students
in Damulaan National High School.

Significance of the Study

Self-Esteem and Confidence. Investigating the use of the cosmetics among


senior high school students can help understand how it affects their self-esteem and
confidence. Does waring makeup boost their self-confidence, or does it contribute to
unrealistic beauty standards that lower self-esteem? This insight can inform
interventions to promote positive self-image.
Academic Performance. Research can explore the impact of wearing cosmetics on
academic performance. Does spending time on makeup affect a student’s abilities to
focus on their studies? This could inform discussions about time management and
priorities for students.

Health and Safety Concerns. The study can assess whether students are
educated about the safe use of the cosmetics, including skincare routines and avoid
harmful substances. This information can be crucial for promoting safe cosmetic
practices among teenagers.

Mental Health and Body Image. Understanding the link between cosmetics and
mental health is significant. Does wearing makeup help with body image and mental
well-being, or does it lead to body dissatisfaction and negative psychological
outcomes? This insight can guide discussion on holistic well-being.

Definition of Terms

Cosmetic Trends are popular styles, colors, or techniques in the beauty and
makeup industry that may change overtime. These trends influence consumer
choices.

Adolescent’s is the transitional phase of growth and development between


childhood and adulthood.

Appearance it is how you look: your clothes, hair, facial expression, skin tone, and
posture all factors into your overall appearance.

Motivation is one of the driving forces behind human behavior. It fuels competition
and sparks social connection.
Self-Expression as expressing one's thoughts and feelings, and these expressions
can be accomplished through words, choices or actions .

Promoting to help or encourage to exist or flourish; further: to promote world


peace. to advance in rank, dignity, position, etc. (opposed to demote)

Psychological is a mental or emotional rather than physical. After a shock, your


problems, and even your physical pain, stem from psychological sources rather than
any bodily ailment.

Holistic relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than
with the individual parts.

Behavior anything that an organism does involving action and response to


stimulation or the response of an individual, group, or species to its environment.

Interactionism is a theoretical perspective in sociology that focuses on the


everyday interactions between individuals as the basis for the development of
society. Interactionism focuses on humans as social actors rather than just focusing
on the role of society.

Demographic refers to distinct characteristics of a population. Researchers use


demographic analysis to analyze whole societies or just groups of people. Some
examples of demographics are age, sex, education, nationality, ethnicity, or religion,
to name a few.

Self-image is the personal view, or mental picture, that we have of ourselves. Self-
image is an “internal dictionary” that describes the characteristics of the self,
including such things as intelligent, beautiful, ugly, talented, selfish, and kind.

Insights a clear, deep, and sometimes sudden understanding of a complicated


problem or situation, or the ability to have such an understanding.
Theory a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially
one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained .

Confidence means feeling sure of yourself and your abilities — not in an arrogant
way, but in a realistic, secure way. Confidence isn't about feeling superior to others.
It's a quiet inner knowledge that you're capable. Confident people: feel secure rather
than insecure.
