Baseload Generation Energy KnowledgeBase

Baseload generation refers to sources of power that operate continuously at a steady level to meet basic level of demand. It is typically provided by nuclear plants, high-efficiency coal and natural gas plants, hydroelectric generation, and cogeneration facilities. In the future, offshore wind may also contribute to baseload power. Baseload generation operates 24 hours per day in contrast to intermediate sources that run during mid-day and peaking sources that operate during hours of peak demand.

Use of generation is often divided into three categories — baseload, which is generation run all 24 hours of the day;
intermediate, which is run from mid-morning until the evening; and peaking, which is run during the peak hours (often from late
afternoon until early evening).

Baseload generation is typically satisfied by nuclear units, high-efficiency coal and natural gas units, hydro generation, and
cogeneration units. In the future baseload may also be provided by offshore wind power.
