Chapter 1
The problem
Introduction
Teenage pregnancy is a situation which involves female adolescent's. A teenage female is female
between 13 to 19 in age. But sometimes preteen's people under 13 can be become pregnant as well.
The fact that teenager's become pregnant is related to many factors. These are related to the specific
situation of the teenager, and the group that she interacts with. The rate of teenage pregnancy varies
from country to country and are related to differences of sexual activities, the general sex education
being provided and contraceptives being available in other countries but in the Philippines there was no
sex education social matters also play a role:often the teenager grow up in poverty. It's also one of the
reasons why there are many teens who are now pregnant it is because of technology that are popular in
our modern days where they can easily connect in harmonious and drastic sites because nowadays teens
are also adventurous and love to discover a new things that are not suitable in their age. Adolescence is
a stage where teenagers adjust in their physical and emotional changes in life (Lemer & Steinberg ,
2004). Teenagers prefer to go with their peers rather than with their parents due to strong pressure.
Nowadays teens are engaged in sexual activities and unprotected sex that may cause some disease or
worst it will lead them into death, because some other cases teens are not well educated about being
pregnant and how to handle their situation they doesn't have the ideas about the effect of having early
sex and how it could affect their lives and by that many teenagers nowadays choose to abort the fetus in
their womb to save their selves from discrimination and being judge by others. Teens are engaged in
activities to pursue their wants for them to satisfy their pleasure.
Here in the Philippines, we believe in saying or our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal "Youth is the hope of our
motherland", and thier hand lies the future generation to follow. But as we are see from the situation
nowadays, what are expecting from the youth in county in the saying. Teenagers are prone to pregnancy.
Almost every year there is a rapid increase on the number of pregnant youth. One of the major causes of
this is a broken family. The parents either the father or the mother choose to leave their children's
behind because of the fact that they cannot handle their obligation and try provide the needs of their
children's or even a third party and also, the influence of other people they might teach other teen's to
do things that might fallen into a situation where they could be harm.

figure 1: Conceptual framework

Effect of teenage pregnancy

Due to incoming pregnant during adolescence, teens mother's are very likely to drop out out of the
school because of the low ambitions and dedication to getting an education.About 30% of female teens
who have a child before the age of 18 complete thier high school education by the age of 22.This means
that every high percentage of teen mother's will not even go on to graduate from high school let alone
pursue post-secondary education. In light of this young girls do not have full qualifications for proper job
in the future. Which leads to have a job with very low wages or even worse., unemployment further , it's
leads to a poor living conditions and the inability to maintain a safe and clean environment for their new
born child. This young woman end up living in welfare and do that have adequate resources for their
child, Overall this young girls are force to delay or postpone any of their plan the future in order to rise
their child.
Another issue associated with teen pregnancy is the young mother is often force to essentially give up
her identity for a new one while switching into a maternal role. This young mother go through many
physical changes:from the adolescent physical adjustment to having to adapt to the ever changing shape
of her body through the pregnancy and her postpartum figure.
Teens are often force to become reliant on their family or financial resources as well as support to help
get her through raising a child. In some cases, teen's are shunned by their parents and do not even
receive any support from their parents who are not accepting of the pregnancy. These young girls are
often forced to lose contact with friends and others in their social groups in order to focus on thier
pregnancy.
Pregnant teens often do not have the proper healthy habits in order to go through a successful child
rearing process. These mothers thus have heightened health risk, which inhibits healthy child
development. Young women can suffer from things such as anemiaas well as blood pressure which is
only possible during pregnancy. Mothersoften smoke and drink because they are not properly educated
on the child rearing process.
Having a child during these essential years truly clashes with the developmental tasks that should be
occurring during adolecents. These young mothers are unable to fully develop a sense of self-identity
because of their new role as an expecting mother. Further, peer and social relationship are strained or
even terminated and teen years are essentially for developing relationship with others and discovering
oneself. Due to all of these factors, teen mothers may end up developing depression after essentially
being alienated from their family and friends. These symptoms of depression increase the chances of the
teenmother commiting suicide.
Pursuing this further, teen mothers are often strained for resources and social support from the father of
the child. In some cases, the teen father will remains present throughout the process and in others the
father will not. If the father remains present there of often high relationship tension and dissatisfaction
because of the lack of financial resources, support and child care which will be needed. There is an
increase in conflict which may lead to breakups, leaving the mother to be single parent of even violence
within the relationship. Due to the lack of financial resources, these young women often do not get
prenatal checkups or regular checkups for their developing child and thus they are unaware of any
health concerns for their child.
Many of these teen mothers are not healthy enough, thus they have a higher risk for obstructed labor
and also these young women often undergo unsafe abortions which lead to the dealth of many young
females and their unborn child. The child of the teen mother is very likely to live in poverty because of its
mother lack of financial resources.
Essentially, the birth of this child becomes the beginning of a perpetual cycle in many cases. The child is
likely to endure many of the same issues it's mother did in her childhood. For instance, the child is likely
to grow up in poverty and in very poor conditions. They are likely to be missing a father figure, leaving
them with fewer role models and increased chances of confiding in other children in the same situation.
The children's academic success is also further compremised and these children do not strive to achieve
much academically. Furthermore, these kids have social problems and are unable to make friends very
easily which leads to poor relationship development which is a crucial stage in adolescence. Poor
relationship development can be linked to the child being deprived economically as well as
educationally. The children are likely to drop out of high school and also succumb to the use of drugs and
alcohol due to lack of parental involvement and monitoribg. The cycle is very likely to repeat itself over
and over
The children are often also likely to suffer health risks in comparison to those born to adults. They are
likely to be cognitively impaired and also susceptible to behavioral issues. The children are likely to be
born underweight and prematurely, which is detrimental to their health and may even result in infant
mortality.

Factors that causes teenage pregnancy

Review Relate Literature

Teenage pregnancy is one of the problem in our society it is because of the rapid increase
that affect each person's lives especially in teens. Teenage pregnancy is seems to be a common concern,
it does not seem to bother people that much. Not until they are personally affected by the issue or until
they finally realized that it had been increasing in number of affected people that it slowly reached an
abnormal stage or the point that it affected too many lives already and too many aspects of living.
Teenage pregnancy is mostly unplanned, and as a result, people react to the experience differently. The
teenager has to come to terms with the unexpected demands of being an adult, and in some cases, she
may also have to deal with disapproval and dissatisfaction shown by significant others like parents and
relatives (Clemens, 2002). According to Macleod and Durrheim (2003), teenage pregnancy as a social
problem that leads to the disruption of schooling; poor obstetric outcomes, inadequate mothering; poor
child outcomes; relationship difficulties with relatives, partners and peers; and demographic concerns
about increasing population numbers. In major cases, teenage mothers are not in a position to go back
to school after delivery as they are forced to look after their children. In some cases, these young
mothers' physical health condition do not make it conducive for them to go back to school. While some
young women may be prevented from going back to school as a result of these factors, De Jang (2001)
found that there are some cases of teenagers who may use their pregnant status to deliberately escape
the demands of high school education. Depression is one of the problems that results to teenage
pregnancy of the women. According to the psychodynamic theory, depression is presented as a disorder
that can be linked to real or imagined object loss (Gee and Rhodes 2003). According to Giddens
(2001:23), cultural factors refer to culture as the way of life of the members of a society, or of groups
within a society.
