Problem

1) A broaching machine uses a series of gears to drive a broach. The speed of the broach is calculated to be 132.72 mm/s. 2) An epicyclic gear train with gears of varying teeth is given. If the sun gear rotates at 300 rpm, the gear D rotates at 375 rpm in the clockwise direction. 3) In a gear train, the torque output from the final 60-tooth gear is 2000 N-m.

Problem

1.) In a broaching machine (figure P2 shown), the shaft A carries a pulley 61 cm in diameter which is driven by a belt from a 30.5 cm pulley on
the countershaft overheard, the latter tuning 150 rpm. The gears 2 and 4 have 12 teeth each, and 3 and 5 have 60 teeth. Gear 5 is fast to 6,
which has 10 teeth and a circular pitch of 26.59 mm and which engages with rack 7 to which is attached the broach. Find the speed with which
the broach is drawn through the work in mm/s.

solution
Find the speed of shaft A:

N1= (D1/D2)*N2

N1= (61/30.5)150 rpm

N1= 300 rpm

Determine the rotational speed of gear 4:

N4= (T2/T4)*N1

N4= (12/12)300 rpm

N4= 300 rpm

Calculate the linear speed of gear 6:

N6= N4*π*Pitch diameter of gear 6

N 6=N 4 π (Pd of gear 6)

Pitch diameter of gear 6= (T6/π)*circular pitch of gear 6

Pd of gear 6= ( Tπ )∗Circular Pitch of gear 6

6

Pitch diameter of gear 6= (10/ π)* 26.59mm

Pd of gear 6= ( 10π )∗26.59 mm

Pitch diameter of gear 6= 84.6mm

Pd of gear 6=84.6 mm

N6= (300 rpm * π * 84.6 mm) / 60

(300 rpm∗π∗84.6 mm)

N 6=
60

N6= 132.72 mm/s

N 6=132.72mm /s

Speed of broach=N6

Sb =N 6

Speed of broach= 132.72 mm/s

Sb =132.72mm /s

2.) An epicyclic gear train is shown in the figure below. The number of teeth on the gears A, B and D are
20, 30 and 20, respectively. Gear C has 80 teeth on the inner surface and 100 teeth on the outer surface.
If the carrier arm AB is fixed and the sun gear A rotates at 300 rpm in the clockwise direction, then the
rpm of D in the clockwise direction is.

solution

When arm is fixed, it becomes simple train
