Working at Height
This is to discuss what you need to think about and do, before and while carrying
out working at height.
Hazards/Risks
Working at height is defined as any where you can injure yourself from the fall.
This includes working besides open excavation.
Hazards:
◦ Incorrect selection or use of access equipment for the particular task
being undertaken is one of the biggest causes of working at height accident.
◦ Never use the wrong piece of equipment just because it’s the only one
available.
◦ Strong weather conditions (wet , windy or icy)
◦ Excess material on a working platform
◦ Do not allow waste to build up
◦ Check equipment being used for damage
Before undertaking work at height:
All work at height must be avoided where possible. If it can not be avoided , a
collective system to prevent falling should be used.
The correct equipment must be supplied and used for the task.
Ensure you have received the correct information for the job and the instructions
and the training on the safe use of the specific access equipment you will use.
All access equipment provided must be inspected at specific moments.
Fall prevention

Every year many people are injured and some killed due to not being correctly
prepared for working at height. This can be caused by not having the correct safety
equipment to do the job and you do it anyway. Another way is if you’re not focusing
while doing the job you could slip and fall hurting yourself.
Damage to equipment can cause fatal or severe injury as well as significant
environmental damage this is because if a ladders steps are damage one could
collapse and you could fall down. Another way you could injure yourself is if you
are on a platform not connected to anything and there is strong winds you could get
pushed out of the barriers.
