Course Information: Chemistry 111 is a 4-credit course
that builds proficiency in the basics of chemistry such as
stoichiometry, electronic structure, periodic properties,
chemical bonding, energy and heat, intermolecular forces, and
physical properties of substances. CEM-111 is not an
introductory chemistry course. We expect you to have skills
and knowledge from high school chemistry, CEM 101, or
other preparation (within five years ideally).
There are two 90-minute class periods and one three-hour
laboratory session each week for 15 weeks this term. A
proposed schedule of topics, reading, problems, and laboratory
work is included with this syllabus. A separate laboratory
schedule will be distributed during the first lab session.
Laboratory is a vital part of this course. Some principles,
concepts, and reactions will be mastered by lab work.
Blackboard is a software system used college-wide to make a
lot of class information available to you on-line. Course pack
materials for both lecture and laboratory, announcements, and
assignments will be posted on Blackboard. The system will
also allow you to view your current scores in the class.
Course Grading: Specific learning outcomes will be
posted on Blackboard for each unit of material. Your mastery
of these objectives will be evaluated by five tests and weekly
lab reports, homework and four quizzes. Each test will cover
some material tested previously. Tests, quizzes and the lab
quiz on conductivity, acids, bases, pH, hydrolysis, and buffers
will be available in the Testing Center on the dates shown on
the testing schedule that follows. In addition, a final
assessment test will be given in class on the last day. You
must take the final assessment test in order to receive a course
grade of C- or higher. There are no makeups for exams or
quizzes.
Requirement Points
5 tests @ 100 points each 500
Final assessment test 40
Acid Base Quiz 25
Labs (25 pts each) 350
Total 915
Laboratory Percentage: There will be 14 labs during the
semester worth a maximum of 350 points. Any missed labs
will result in zero points for that session. A student must
complete the work for at least 12 labs to receive a grade of
C– or higher in the course.
Final Grades: A final course percentage will be calculated by
adding 75% of your class percentage (see total above) and
25% of your lab percentage and used to determine your final
letter grade. If you are repeating you will not have to take the
labs again unless you want to improve your grade. You are
certainly welcome to repeat all the labs if desired.

Final Course % Final Grade Final Course % Final Grade
100% – 93% A 76% – 73% C
92% – 90% A– 72% – 70% C–
89% – 87% B+ 69% – 67% D+
86% – 83% B 66 %– 63% D
82% – 80% B– 62% – 60% D–
79% – 77% C+ below 60% F
To earn a grade of C– or better you must also meet the
following criteria:
Have completed at least 12 of 15 laboratory
sessions
Have a lecture % that is at least 70%
Have a lab % that is at least 70%
Have taken the final assessment
Note that a course grade of C- in CEM-111 does NOT meet
the prerequisite for CEM-122 and is generally not accepted
for transfer credit at other institutions. If you score less
than 70% in lecture or lab then your grade will be based on
the lowest % of the two.
Learning Support: If you have difficulties with any of the
course material, get help immediately! I am available during
my office hours or via phone or e-mail to answer your
questions. Please do not hesitate to contact me—remember, I
am your best tutor! If you suffer from test anxiety or any other
issue interfering with this class, please let me know as soon as
possible. Students with documented learning disorders can be
accommodated in the Learning Support Service Office.
Lastly, tutoring is available free of charge through the Disability
Service Office. Contact their office for more information or visit
them on-line at:
http://www.wccnet.edu/resources/learningassistance/learni
ngsupport/
If you have a documented disability and wish to discuss
academic accommodations, please contact me as soon as
possible.
Academic Dishonesty: I adhere to the college policies on
academic dishonesty that are discussed in the Student Rights
and Responsibilities document. You can find this in the WCC

Course Goals:
Develop the skills and knowledge that will enable you to:
Apply the language of chemistry in preparation for other
courses.
Use mathematical tools in investigations and analysis.
Describe the relationship between the structure of matter
and its reactions and properties.
Describe the changes matter undergoes in structure and
properties as well the energy involved.
MISCELLANEOUS
This course is 50% remote. Lectures will be virtual, and
labs will be in-person. Therefore, you must be very
organized, motivated and communicative. Sometimes
things will not work right (zoom, wifi etc). We will do our
best to navigate through this unprecedented time.
Lecture: we will generally use the full time with a
scheduled 5 min break approximately half-way
through the class.
Mon Lab 9-12pm LA 301
Please arrive punctually for class. It is your
responsibility to obtain what you missed.
Please turn your video on and keep it on for
majority of the call.
Please refrain from profanity (you know what those
are) when addressing the teacher or your classmates.
Please have access to the text in lecture along with
your calculator.

Please let me know sooner than later if you are
experiencing difficulties in the course.
The Chemistry Dept. does not grant audit status past
and incompletes are only granted under extreme
circumstances and when most of the coursework is
already completed.
If you stop coming to class don’t assume you will get
a W. I will not give W’s pass the drop deadline.
Whatever grade you have that’s what you will get.
Students will be allowed ONE exam makeup, which
will result in a 25% reduction in score.
Each exam will have an online portion (90minutes-2
attempts) and a written portion(one-attempt) which
must be attempted within the same time frame as the
online portion to receive full credit.
Tests/Quizzes will use material from previous tests.
We are continuously building on old material.
Academic dishonesty is punishable from a zero in a
particular assignment, failing the class, to expulsion
from the college.
A diagnostic test will be administered online and must
be completed during the first week of the semester.
This test is mandatory. The score will not impact your
grade.
Labs
Students must attend labs to get full credit for labs.
CEM-111 Syllabus Winter 2022–Clarke

Lab reports must be written in carbon-less copy lab
notebook unless there is a lab that is a handout
These can be purchased online or at WCC bookstore.
Labs must be scanned and submitted as a single pdf
document. Multiple scans or labs written in another
type notebook will not be accepted. You can use scan
genius or another app from your phone. These
reports must be submitted on blackboard only not via
email.
Students are allowed ONE late lab. Labs are due
24hrs after the start of lab (i.e., 9am on Tuesdays).
Specifically, the late lab is due no later than 24 hours
after the lab is due (No later than 9am Wed). Beyond
that time period, the lab will be graded as zero. All
other late labs will be counted as zero.
