Fieldwork

1. The document describes a fieldwork exercise to determine an individual's pace factor by measuring distances while pacing and calculating the average pace length. 2. The student paced distances of 20m, 40m, and 60m five times each to calculate an average pace length of 0.6993m. 3. Using this pace factor, the student then paced a 150m distance and calculated the paced distance as 152.31m, with a discrepancy of 2.31m from the actual taped distance.

Fieldwork 1 – Pacing

Name: Claire Andrea R. Gubat

Course/Yr./Sec.: BSCE-2A

Objectives:

1. To determine the average length of your own pace or the individual pace factor
2. To become familiar with using a tape to measure approximate horizontal distances.
3. To measure a distance by pacing
Equipment

Steel tape, chaining pins

Instructions:
a) Determining the individual pace factor
1. The location for this lab shall be determined by your instructor.
2. Place chaining pins in the ground at 0m, 20m, 40m, and 60m stations.
3. Use ranging rods to ensure that all 4 pins are in a straight line.
4. Use your normal walk to pace off each distance (i.e.: 0 to 20, 0 to 40 and 0 to 60) a total of 5 times each.
5. Record the number of paces for each trial in your field book.
6. Calculate the average number of paces for each distance.
7. Calculate the average length of your pace.
8. The average length of your face will be your individual pace factor

Number of Paces
Trial 20 m 40m 60 m
1 32 63 86
3 30 57 87
3 30 59 79
4 31 58 79
5 30 59 78
Sum 153 296 409
Average 30.6 59.2 81.8
PF 0.6993

b) Determining a distance using the individual pace factor

1. The location for this lab shall be determined by your instructor.
2. Place chaining pins in the ground.
3. Use ranging rods to ensure that the pins are a straight line.
4. Use your normal walk to pace the distance
5. Record the number of paces for each trial in your field book.
6. Compute the sum and the average number of paces.
7. Compute the pace distance by multiplying the average number of paces by the pace factor
8. Compute the discrepancy between the taped distance and the paced distance.

Trial Number of Paces

1 208
2 221
3 225
4 221
5 214
Sum 1089
Average 217.8
Pace Distance 152.31

Discrepancy = 2.31
Computation:
a.

 Distance 1: 20m
Sum = Trial 1 + Trial 2 + Trial 3 + Trial 4 + Trial 5
= 32 + 30 + 30 + 31 + 30

SUM = 153 b.
Average = Sum / No. of Trials  Distance: 150m
= 153 / 5 Sum = Trial 1 + Trial 2 + Trial 3 + Trial 4 + Trial 5
AVERAGE = 30.6 = 208+ 221 + 225 + 221 + 214
 Distance 2: 40m SUM = 1089
Sum = Trial 1 + Trial 2 + Trial 3 + Trial 4 + Trial 5 Average = Sum / No. of Trials
= 63 + 57 + 59 + 58 + 59 = 1089 / 5
SUM = 296 AVERAGE = 217.8
Average = Sum / No. of Trials
= 296 / 5 Pace Distance = Pace Factor * Average
AVERAGE = 59.2 = 0.6993 * 217.8
 Distance 3: 60m PACE DISTANCE = 152.31m
Sum = Trial 1 + Trial 2 + Trial 3 + Trial 4 + Trial 5
= 86 + 87 + 79 + 79 + 78 Discrepancy = Pace Distance – Taped Distance
SUM = 409 = 152.31m – 150m
Average = Sum / No. of Trials DISCREPANCY = 2.31m
= 409 / 5
AVERAGE = 81.8

Pace Factor = Total Distance/ Total Average

= (20m + 40m + 60m)/(30.6 + 59.2 + 81.8)
PACE FACTOR = 0.6993
