a. explain why it is important to promote appropriate behavior and respect
for others (2.2)
- Refer to ground rules and promoting an appropriate atmosphere in the
class. Please focus on reasons why this is important –e.g. to create a
positive learning environment where everyone can participate
Armitage (2012), highlights the importance of creating a positive teaching
environment and this can be achieved by creating ground rules. This will reaffirm
the expectation of appropriate behaviour and respect which reflect core British
Values.
Students should be an integral part in creating ground rules:
to ensure the group have agreed to a joint contract;
Prevent problems arising in sessions;
To promote a commitment to the programme and learning;
So the learners and the teacher have clear communication;
So the ground rules can be referred back to through the course to address individual
or group behaviour;
There are some ground rules that are non-negotiable and others that are negotiable.
For example, being punctual ad having good attendance are non-negotiable and
breaktimes are negotiable.
b. Explain ways to promote equality and value diversity (1.3)
- Give definition of each.
- Explain ways to promote each. You may write a paragraph for equality
and one for diversity.
“Equality is about the rights of learners to have access to, attend, and participate
in their chosen learning experience”
Gravels 2014:60
All learners have a right to learn to the best of their ability. This is underpinned by
The Equality Act 2010.
There are 9 protected characteristics underpinned by the Equality Act 2010
Age
disability
gender reassignment
marriage and civil partnership
pregnancy and maternity
race
religion
sex •
sexual orientation

In practice equality means teachers have a responsibility to ensure all learners do
not face discrimination in their learning experience. Where teachers are aware of
discrimination that should challenge this, or sign post the learner/s for support.
Promoting equality requires careful planning at each stage of the learning cycle to
ensure learners have positive outcomes.
Diversity is understanding and celebrating the individuality of all learners and
celebrating these differences. With any group of learners, a teacher should
recognise the diversity within the group and plan how to celebrate this within the
weekly sessions.
Example of ways you could promote equality & diversity include:
Referring learners with additional learning needs to the supported learning
departments where they can carry out assessments and provide resources to
support the learning process;
Avoid bringing your personal views into the classroom. The teacher should remain
professional and objective at all times;
Promote the British Value of mutual respect. This can be highlighted at the start of
the programme with an introduction into British values and introduces again through
the groups ground rules;
Not promoting one group characteristic at the expensive of other;
Asking students to talk about their experiences
Celebrating /talking about the history of cultural events
c. Explain the importance of identifying and meeting learners’ needs (1.4.)
- Give reasons why:
- It is important to identify
- It is important to meet learners’ needs
- - you may write 1 paragraph for each
Identifying leaners’ needs is the first stage of the Learning Cycle (although the
teacher can review this throughout the programme). The process begins when the
teacher reviews the student’s application, interview and assessment.
It is important to identify learners needs as:
it will have a direct impact on learners’ outcomes which ultimately reflects on the
teacher;
the teachers must ensure the course is at the appropriate level and the course that
will allow them to progress onto their chose career;
the teacher can use this information to plan /amend scheme of work/sessions pans/
activities and tasks;
It ensures the teacher is promoting equality and celebrating diversity;
Identifying barriers to learning;
to gain an understanding of your student’s;

To ensure the college can offer the appropriate support for that student;
Meeting learners needs allows the learner to have the best opportunity in attending
and participating in the course and demonstrates to the learner the teacher see’s
and values them. The teacher is not a specialist all areas and should utilise other
professional internally and externally to ensure learners needs are met.
It is important to meet the learners needs to ensure;
The teacher is giving the learner the support they need to complete the programme
to the best of their ability;
The teacher is adhering to the Equality Act 2010 and celebrating diversity;
To remove the barriers that may impact on the learner attending and participating in
the course;
To build the students confidence;
To prevent the student from dropping out of the course or failing the programme;
To raise the outcome of the college;
To improve teaching standards;
d. Explain ways to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment (2.1)
- you may write one paragraph for each
The learning environment has a direct impact on the success of students learning.
Gravels 2014 explains the learning environment consist of the physical, social and
learning. The 3 areas are inter-linked and will impact on learning. The teacher
should ensure each the 3 areas are safe and supportive of learning.
Maintaining a safe learning environment could include ensuring physical
surroundings are in working order. This includes lights, air conditioning and
temperature and IT equipment. It will also include other areas that the student has to
use whilst on including lifts, toilets and ensuring students are informed about the fire
procedures. Safety will also refer to the social aspects of learning. Students
should feel safe from discrimination and bullying. Ground rules and British Values
should be imbedded into the learning environment. The teacher should complete a
risk assessment to identify and minimise any risks. Concerns should be reported to
the correct department.
For example, a teacher who planned to deliver a session in a room on a hot
summers day where the air conditioning is not working and there are no windows
that open may find the students are unable to concentrate due to the heat. This may
also be in breach of Health & Safety at Work Act. 1974 and could have legal
implication for the teacher and the organisation if this is not reported and repaired.

The layout of the classroom can foster a support learning environment. Gravells
2014 highlights choosing a layout that promotes good communication with the group
is most suitable. For example, the horse shoe allows the teacher and the group to
have a clear view of each other to communicate as opposed to the classroom style
layout, where the learners at the back of the class will not have a clear view. The
teacher will have to assess which layout is the most suitable to support learning
within the group.
A teacher can create a supportive learning environment by the use of ice breakers
that allow the group to bond and build self-confidence. Activities should promote
equality and celebrate diversity and encourage learners to foster an atmosphere of
mutual respect. The teacher can plan support for students before the start of the
program with information obtained in the application and interview process. For
example, this could in involved. Changing the font size to support the needs of a
visually impaired learner or ensuring a learner with mobility issues has lift access.
