RAM Connection

The document discusses different types of joint connections that can be used in structural steel design software. It provides details on the various joint families, including the member sections and orientations that each connection accepts. It also lists steel material parameters that can be input into the software and notes which connections allow for beam inclination angles.

Joint

RAM CONNECTION Standalone offers different joint families, each one of them is able to receive
various types of connections. In the next table, all family joints, available connections in the program
and the loads required to formulate all the design checks are shown.
Column, brace, girder or beam:

While only W, S or HP sections are allowed for beams or girders connected to steel connections,
rectangular, circular HSS sections together with W, S and HP sections may be used for columns
depending on the specific type of connection. All connections accept W, S or HP columns except the
Through Plate.

The connection that work with HSS columns are:

Shear Connections:

 Single Plate (with rectangular and circular HSS columns)

 Through plate (with rectangular and circular HSS columns)
 Clip angle
 Shear tee
 Stiffened seated
 Unstiffened seated

Moment connections:

 Directly welded connection

 Flange plated connections (diaphragm plate)
 Extended end plate
 Cap plate (under continuous beams)

Bracing connections:

All bracing connections that include a beam and/or a column as in the case of CBB (Column-
Beam-Brace) joints or CVR (chevron) joints.

Base plate connections:

 Column – Base (with rectangular and circular HSS columns)

 Column – Base – Braces (with rectangular HSS columns)

Some connections need special considerations for built up members. In this case the program
requires the definition of the member type (laminated or built up).
Material:

Enter a steel material from the database.

The steel material includes the following parameters:

Name: Material name.

Fy: Specified minimum yield stress.

Fu: Specified minimum tensile strength.

E: Modulus of elasticity.

Ry: Ratio of the Expected Yield Strength to the minimum specified yield strength (Fy).

Rt: Ratio of the expected tensile strength to the specified minimum tensile strength Fu, as related to
over strength in material yield stress (Ry).
Inclination angles of members (Skew and Slope)

Many of the connections allow beam inclination angles, either horizontal and/or vertical. The
list of the connections that allow inclination angles are as follows:
