Rules for Nomenclature of Organic Compounds By IUPAC System
Select longest continuous carbon chain containing double bond, tiple bonds and functional groups
if any and named it as Root.
If Two Carbon chain are of Equal length then select that Carbon Chain which contains maximum
number of branches.
After selecting longest carbon chain, number the carbon atom of the chain from nearest to unique
part (High Priority Functional Group).
If two different alkyl radicals present at the same position from both side of the
cahin number the carbon atom from nearest to smaller alkyl radical.
If double bond and triple bond appears at the same position from both side of the
chain then number the carbon atom from nearest to double bond.
If two different functional groups appears at the same position then numbering
preference will be given to High Priority Functional Group.
Order of Precedence of Functional Groups
Priority Name of Functional Group Formula As Functional Group As Substituent
1 Carboxylic Acids R – COOH -Alkanoic acid -carboxy
2 Esters R – COOR -Alkyl Alkanoate -oxycarbonyl
3 Amide R – CONH2 -Amide -carboxamide
4 Aldehydes R – COH -Alkanal -formyl
5 Ketones R – COR -Alkanone -oxo
6 Alcohols R – OH -Alkanol -hydroxy
7 Amines R – NH2 -Amino Alkane -amine
8 Ethers R – OR -Alkoxy Alkane
9 Alkenes C=C -ene
10 Alkyne C≡C -yne
11 Halogens ( F2 > Cl2 > Br2 > I2 ) -X Halo
12 Alkyl Radical -R
For Naming:
Position of Alkyl Radical(s) if any with their multipilicity (if any) and their names in alphabetic order
+ name of root with functional group name if any.
