Tutorial 08

This document contains 5 questions related to flow nets and seepage analysis. Question 1 asks to draw a flow net for flow beneath an impermeable dam. Question 2 asks how deep an excavation can be made in saturated clay before bottom heaving occurs. Question 3 asks what depth of coarse sand is required above an existing soil layer to provide a safety factor of 2 against piping. Question 4 asks to calculate the seepage rate through a dam located over anisotropic soil given information from the flow net. Question 5 asks to calculate the permeability of soil B given permeability and head loss information for soil A in a permeameter test setup.

Q. 1 Draw a flow net for flow beneath an impermeable dam as shown in Fig. 1 In the field, the porous
geologic material below the dam extends a long distance in the upgradient and downgradient directions, but
only a portion of it is illustrated here. The dam is 21 meters wide in the direction perpendicular to the figure.
The water level in the reservoir contained by the dam is 10 meters above the surface of the low hydraulic
conductivity material below the aquifer which is used as a datum. The water level in the reservoir below the
dam is 4 meters lower than the water behind the dam and the water below the dam runs off downstream.

Q. 2 At a give location, 8m thick saturated clay with water content of 30% and specific gravity of 2.7 is
undrain by sand. this sand layer is under artesian pressure equivalent to 3m held of water. It is proposed to
make an open excavation in the clay. How deep can this excavation be made before bottom heaves?

Q. 3 A 1.25m layer of soil having porosity of 0.35m and specific gravity of 2.65 is subjected to an upward
seepage head (hydraulic head) of 1.85m. What depth of coarse sand would be required above the existing
soil to provide a factor of safety of 2 against piping. Assume that coarse sand has the same porosity and
specific gravity as that of soil.

Q. 4 A dam is located over anisotropic soil having coefficient of permeability of 8×10 -6 m/sec in horizontal
direction and 2×10-6 m/sec in vertical direction. The flow net drawn has 6 numbers of flow channels and 12
numbers of equipotential drops. If the head causing flow is 16 m, the quantity of seepage through the dam in
10-6 m3/sec/m run is:

Q. 5 Two different types of soil A and B are placed in a permeameter mould having cross sectional area 50
cm2 and water is allowed to flow through them under a head of 25 cm as shown in fig. If the permeability of
soil A is 2×10-3 cm/sec and 40% of total head causing flow is lost during flow through the layer of soil A,
Find the coefficient of permeability of soil B.
