Let us remember that
we are in the holy
presence of GOD…
In the name of the Father,
the Son and the Holy Spirit…
"Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's
house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare
a place for you? And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and
will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way
where I am going." Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are
going; how can we know the way?" Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth,
and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me."
Lord Jesus, you fill us with the joy of your
saving presence and you give us the hope of
everlasting life with the Father in Heaven.
LET US PRAY… Show me the Father that I may grow in the
knowledge of your great love and truth.

What is Human Computer Interaction?
• Human-computer interaction is a
multidisciplinary field of study focusing on
the design of computer technology and, in
particular, the interaction between humans
and computers.
• Characterized as a dialogue or interchange
Other between the human and the computer
because the output of one serves as the
input for the other in an exchange of
definitions actions and intentions
• Study of interaction between people and
computers
• Concerned with the design, evaluation
and implementation of interactive
computing systems for human use and
with the study of major phenomena
surrounding them
• Interdisciplinary field in which computer
scientists, engineers, psychologist, social
scientists and design professionals play
important roles
Why is human-computer
interaction important?
Human-computer interaction is of
critical importance because it makes
products more usable, safe, helpful, and
functional. It creates a seamless and
enjoyable user experience, rather than
leaving the user frustrated as they try to
figure out why the system is not working
as they expect it to work and doing what
they want it to do.
What are the components of
Human-Computer
Interactions?
• Organization Factors: Politics, Work place, Design, Training
• Environmental Factors: Noise, Ventilation
• The User: Capabilities and cognitive processes, Personality, Experience, Motivation, Emotions
• Comfort Factors: Equipment, Layout
• User Interface: Input and output of device, Colors, Layout, Icons, Graphics, Navigation
• Task Factors: How complex/easy it is, skills, task allocation
• Constraints: Cost, Time, Equipment
• System Functionality: Hardware, Software, Application
• Productivity Factors: Least amount of cost for most efficient output, Increase innovation, Problem
solving
What are the goals of Human-
Computer Interactions?
• The goal of HCI is to create a user-friendly
system that is also functional and safe. In
order to achieve this goal, developers must
be able to:
• Empathize with the users and anticipate how
they will use the technology
• Develop tools and techniques to enable best
practices on building a sufficient system
• Produce an effective, efficient, and safe
interaction
Multidisciplinary which means it
combines the theories and
practices from a number of fields
including computer science,
cognitive and behavioral
psychology, anthropology,
sociology, ergonomics, industrial
design, and more
Interdisciplinary
Field of HCI
When we say interdisciplinary, it means it
combines research methods and tools from
computer science, behavioral science, design,
and media studies.
Most research in this field aims to
improve human–computer interaction
by improving how an interface is used
and understood by humans.
HCI helps to make interfaces
that increase productivity, enhance
user experience, and reduce risks in
safety-critical systems.
Poorly designed machines lead to many
unexpected problems, sometimes just user
frustration, but sometimes, chaotic disasters.

HCI tackles questions concerning how
people interact with computers
• Are computers intuitive or
complicated?
• Are computers rewarding or
frustrating?
• How can computers ne made
accessible to everybody?
• To what level can computer
interaction be standardized?
• Are computers “user – friendly”?
• What does it mean to be “user –
friendly”
In 1988, Donald Norman put forth 7 principles that
could be used to assess human-computer interaction.
According to him, these seven stages can be used to
transform difficult tasks. Norman’s 7 principles of HCI
(Human-Computer Interaction) are:
What are the • Use both knowledge in the world as well as
knowledge in the head.
• Simplify task structures.
7 HCI • Make things visible.
principles? • Get the mapping right (User mental model =
Conceptual model = Designed model).
• Convert constraints into advantages (Physical
constraints, Cultural constraints, Technological
constraints, etc.).
• Design for Error.
• When all else fails − Standardize.
HCI Three Components The goal of HCI is to improve
the interaction between users
and computers by making
Human computers more user – friendly
and receptive to the user’s
needs.

Why do we need to understand
HUMANS?
• Interacting with technology is
cognitive?
• Human information processing
referred to as cognition?
• Human cognition process is involved
when interacting with system, like
attention, perception and recognition,
memory, learning, reasoning, problem
solving and decision making
Why do we need to understand HUMANS continued…
• Need to take into account cognitive processes
involved and cognitive limitation of users
• Provides knowledge about what users can and be
expected to do
• Identifies and explains the natures and causes of
problems users encounter
• Supply theories, modelling tools, guidance and
methods that can be lead to the design of better
interactive products
• Must consider what are users good and bad at
Let us now define
what a computer is…
COMPUTER
In fact, the most
sophisticated machines
are worthless unless
they can be used
properly by humans
What about
Interaction?
• INTERACTION
• Refers to a dialogue generated by
the command and data, input to the
computer and the sensory /
perceptual input to the human and
motor response output of the
human
INTERACTION
• There are numbers of ways in which
the user can communicate with the
system, batch input and direct
manipulation
“Interaction takes place at the
INTERFACE”
INTERFACE
• Is made up of a set of
hardware devices and
software tools from
the computer side and
a system of sensory,
motor and cognitive
processes from the
human side,
• USER - INTERFACE
• Mediate the
interaction (dialog)
between humans
and computers
• The user – interface
today is often one
of the most critical
factors regarding
the success or
failure of a
computer system

USER – INTERFACE
“Today, user needs are
recognized to be important in
designing interactive computer
systems, but as recently as
1980, they received little
emphasis” J. Grudin
USER – INTERFACE
A balance of two key
features is needed for an
effective user interface
• Expressive
• Intuitive
