EXPERIMENT
MOMENT OF INNERTIA OF FLYWHEEL APPARATUS
Aim : To determine the Moment of Inertia of a given Flywheel.
Description :
This set-up is having a heavy flywheel of MS Plate fixed to a spindle shaft. This spindle shaft
is then supported in a pedestal bearing block, which allows the flywheel to rotate freely about
its axis. On this spindle shaft provision is made to wound nylon rope, which is having weight
pan. The whole set-up is mounted on table type frame and stand, made from thick MS angle.
Nylon of fixed length is tied to the weight pan. Weight set is provided to carry out the
experiment. With the help of Stop watch, one can measure the descending time of the weight
pan.
Specifications:
01. Flywheel : MS Round Plate.
Size: 200mm Dia. x 40mm thick.
Weight of the Flywheel: 7.0kgs.
Pulley Dia. : 125mm r = 62.5mm
02. Bearing Block: with Ball Bearings – 2 Nos.
03. Weight Pan with weight set.
04. Stop Watch – digital Racer Type.
Procedure:
01. Wound the string (nylon rope) to the flywheel spindle shaft. Hold the pan in the hand
when it comes to the topmost position near the pulley.
02. Put weight in the weight pan say 1kg or 2kg
03. Allow the weight pan to move in downward direction.
04. Start the stop watch immediately after releasing your hand support to the pan and measure
the time when it reaches the bottom position. Repeat this procedure 2 – 3 times and take the
mean of the time taken.
** While measuring the time required to descend, one has to count the revolutions of
the Wheel from the beginning till it hits the ground and should continue these counting of
revolutions till the wheel comes to rest.
05. Enter the value of time, weight put in the pan in the observation table.
06. Add some more weight and repeat the above procedure NO. 02 to 05, once again.
The test can be conducted for different weights.
07. All the readings should be entered in the observation table and do the calculations.
Observation Table :

Constants :
01. Weight of Flywheel ‘M’ : 7.0kgs.
02. Flywheel Radius ‘R’ : 0.100m,
03. Thickness of flywheel : 0.04m
04. Radius of Pulley ‘r’ : m
05. Fixed Rope Length ‘h’ : 2.0 m ( Descending Travel )
CALCULATIONS
Technical Data
h = m. ( Vertical distance traveled by the weight pan from Upper end to Lower end ) r
= m ( radius of pulley )
m = Weight added in pan ( Kg. )
g = 9.81 m/sec2 ( gravitational acceleration ) t =
time required ( in seconds)
n = No. of Revolutions of Flywheel from Start till it touches the ground.
N = No. of revolutions of flywheel after it touches the ground till it comes to rest.
1. Moment of Inertia of Flywheel ‘IFExp.’
IFExp. = m x r2 x { N/ N+n} x [ (g x t2 / 2 h) - 1 ] ….kg.-m2
2. Theoretical Moment of Inertia of Flywheel will be determined by using the
relation..
IFT = ½ x M x R2 …. Kg.-m2
where M = weight of the flywheel = 7.0 kg.
R = 0.100m
PRECAUTIONS
1. Rotate the Flywheel gradually for smooth descend of weight pan. It should be rotated in
one direction only.
2. Maximum weight to be used is 1.0 kgs.
