1. MATERIAL SELECTION FOR RUBBER LINING OF PIPINGS
1.1 Service Condition
Contractor have reviewed service conditions of lining for piping as follow ;
• Plant : TIMOR-1
• Fluid : Sea Water
• Temperature : 60 deg C
• Pressure : 5 kg/cm2
1.2 Lining Material
Contractor have selected lining material to be Neoprene Rubber, from contractor vital
experiences considering above service condition.
Contractor have many references in similar process and service conditions, and it shows
satisfactory long life service.
Please refer bellow data for lining material
• Lining Material : Neoprene rubber, autoclave curing tape
• Thickness : DN <100 : 3.0mm; DN >= 100 : 5.0mm
2. RUBBER LINING PROCEDURE GENERAL
2.1 Visual and dimensional inspection of substrate before lining.
Before applying the lining, dimension, appearance, weld zone and flatness will be
inspected in accordance with drawings and inspection standards to ensure that no
difficulties arc involved in the application of linings. Make sure that the weld zone is free
from pinhole, spatter, sharp chamfering and under cut more than 0.5mm in depth.
2.2 Blasting (SSPC SP 10)
All surfaces to be lined shall be blasted in accordance with SSPC SP 10 in to ensure that
the surface is clean and free from nmts and scales.

2.3 Application of rubber sheet
After blasting is completed, rubber sheet of 5mm shall be cut to the shape of substrate and
pressed sufficiently with hand rollers so as not to leave any air under the sheets. The
overlap joint at the flange shall be in accordance with Vendor’s method.
Overlap joints shall be cut slantways to joint smoothly. Particular care shall be taken not to
leave air at the respective corners and uneven portions
2.4 Intermediate inspection
The following inspection shall be conducted alter sheet application and before curing.
- Appearance inspection
- Pin hole test
2.5 Curing
For a uniform and adequate vulcanization, curing will be carried out in accordance with
specified curing temperature and time. Following is typical curing curve with autoclave with
low pressure steam (3bar)

2.6 Application Procedure
2.7 Repairing Procedure – After Vulcanization
All pinholes and other lining defects will be repaired in accordance with following instruction:
a) The defects will be cut of with knife and prepared with grinder
b) The surface of metal and rubber will buffed with grinder
c) The surface of buffed metal and rubber will be cleaned with solvent

d) Application of adhesives.
- The primer will be applied over the metal surfaces
- The second coat and rubber adhesive will be applied upper the metal and rubber surface
e) The repairing rubber sheet will be cleaned with solvent
f) The repairing rubber sheet will applied over the coated surface so as not to leave any air
under the sheets.
g) Curing.
Repaired parts will be cured in an autoclave, with or steam
h) Inspection on repaired parts
Inspection on repaired parts shall be executed in same manner as standard procedure for
normal lining
2.8 Marking Procedure
After external painting, marking shall be made following manner with white paint or marker.
Also flow direction shall be marked, if directions are shown in drawings.

4. INSPECTION AND TESTS
4.1 Code and Standard
Lining Adhesion test shall follow ASTM D413. Lining Adhesion test
4.2 Inspection and Testing at Manufacturer’s Work
All parts to be lined shall be subject to inspection regarding suitability, fabrication, and
workmanship before rubber lining is performed.
They shall be tested, including pressure tested as stated in the standard specification for
steel pipes.
4.3 Testing after Lining and Vulcanization
The lined surfaces shall be inspected for blisters, pulls or lifted edges at seams, and surface
defects.
Defects shall be repaired in accordance with the lining manufacturer’s recommendations.
More than five defects per square meter shall be sufficient cause for rejection.
4.4 Testing on Site before Erection
Every single, hard rubber-lined piece shall again be spark tested before being erected.
Sections with a crack or a pinhole in the lining shall not be erected
