1 On the first day of summer, Cody Martin woke up and spent a few
‘moments staring at the clear blue sky outside his bedroom window,
basking in his new freedom. Maybe he'd go fishing or help his father
fix the barn. Then he spotted a brown spider crawling on the wall.
2 Cody was afraid of spiders. The thought of walking into a spider
web made him break out in a cold sweat. Once, when he saw a big
spider in the barn, he had screamed and called to his father for help,
But his father, who knew all about Cody's fear, had been scornful
“Don't be such a chicken,” his father had said. Cody knew he needed
to get over his fear and that he needed to do it himself.
3 On this particular morning when Cody saw the spider, he froze
again. The house was quiet; Mom was at work, and Dad was outside
somewhere, There was nobody to help him. This is so humiliating, he
thought. Then he had another thought: Its time to grow up and deal
with this spider with some courage.
> 4 — Cody climbed out of his bed, never taking his eyes off the creature
slowly creeping up the wall, He reached toward his desk for the piece
of slate that he wrote on in school. Then he tiptoed closer and closer to
the spider. He held the slate chalkboard a few inches from the wall,
poised to smack the spider flat. Cody paused to take carefull aim, afraid
to miss and send the spider flying, possibly on to his hand. But in that,
moment of silence, he heard a voice in his head whisper, “Stop.”
5 Cody heeded the voice and made himself stare at the spider, which
was just a few inches away. Its brown body was bulbous and speckled;
its eight legs, nimble and thin. He could even make out three rows of
eyes on its head. The spider moved steadily and silently, oblivious of its
imminent death.
{clea over in his mind, Then he held the slate flat against the wall,
directly in the spider's path. Now it was the spider's turn to pause.
After a moment, it crawled onto the slate.
7 Cody hurried down the hallway, holding the slate like a waiter’s
tray. Then he pushed the screen door, stepped onto the back porch,
and waved the slate over the railing. As the spider tumbled into the
ong grass, Cody smiled. “I did it!” he yelled, feeling like he'd just
