Classification of skill
Difficulty continuum
The difficulty continuum involves skills that are grouped according to how complex or difficult the
movement is.
A simple skill doesn’t need much thought or decision making to do, e.g., running
A complex skill need a lot of thought or decision making to do, e.g., an overhead kick in football

Catching whilst Marking a player
stationary without the ball
A skill I am strong at is catching whilst stationary. I have put it in that place on the continuum as it is
quite a simple skill. This is because when you receive the ball you are not moving, so there is less
room for error when catching the ball. Also, there isn’t much thought or decision making in this skill
so it fits in to this category well.
A skill I am weaker at is marking a player without the ball. I have put it in that place on the
continuum as it is more of a complex skill than simple. This is because there is a lot of thought and
decision making in this skill as you have to stand in front of the attacker but side on so you can see
both the ball and them in the corner of your eye so you are prepared when either the player or the
ball moves so you can intercept and block the pass. You also need to be on the balls of your feet to
be prepared to shadow wherever the attacker decides to go.
Environmental continuum
The environmental continuum involves skills that are grouped according to weather they are open or
closed skills
An open skill is performed in a changing environment, where a performer has to react and adapt to
external factors. E.g., during a football, you need to adapt to things such as the position of other
players on pitch.
A closed skill is always performed in the same predictable environment and is not affected by
external factors. often the skill involves the same action each time. E.g., taking a penalty shot in
basketball, when the conditions and movement are the same.

pivoting Catching on the run
A skill I am strong a is pivoting. I have put it in that place on the continuum as it is quite a closed skill,
although it could happen anywhere on the court. This is because when you pivot, you have the ball,
so no one can stand less then three feat away from you, giving you space to move around on the
foot you landed on first. Also, this skill involves the same action each time, as well as its predictable
environment factors.
A skill I am weaker at is catching on the run. I have put it in that place on the continuum as it is more
of an open skill. This is because there is room for interception and footwork if done incorrectly. For
this skill, you have to react and adapt to external factors for avoiding interceptions and has a
changing environment as catching on the run can happen anywhere on the court.
