SINGLE LOOP PROCESS
CONTROL(SLPC) &
MULTILOOP PROCESS
CONTROL(MLPC)
SINGLE LOOP PROGRAMMABLE CONTROLLER(SLPC)
• If a system requires a single control loop or discrete devices then a single loop
controller can be used to control a thermal or process machine.
• These instruments can range from the very basic - single, manual, setpoint
changes, through to sophisticated profilers which have the capability to execute
multiple setpoint changes over a specified period of time.
• Single loop controllers are typically front-of-panel products. These controllers
provide a clear display on the front of the controller. The machine operator or
engineer (end user) can use this display to set up the controller in situ and make
subsequent program changes.
• Widely used in industry today to control small plant facilities and serve as back-
ups to distributed control systems.

MULTI LOOP PROGRAMMABLE CONTROLLER(MLPC)
• If you have more than one control loop within a single system then a
multi-loop controller can be used. In simplified terms a multi-loop
controller can be thought of as having multiple temperature controllers
within a single instrument
• Multi-loop temperature controllers are generally mounted behind the
panel as opposed to single loop controllers which are often front panel
mounted. The controllers are typically programmed using a proprietary
software program on a PC which downloads settings to the multi-loop
temperature controller using communications.

COMPARISON OF SLPC WITH MLPC
• Using a multi-loop temperature controller rather than multiple single loop
controllers can have many benefits.
1. Installation costs can be reduced due to having one common connection
point, resulting in
2. Less wiring
3. Minimising panel cut outs.
4. Controllers can be changed without powering down the system. This
process, known as hot-swapping, it significantly reduces machine
downtime.
5. SLPC do not interface with smart field devices whereas MLPC does.
6. Both SLPC & MLPC lack on historical trends which will aid in device failure
diagonosis.
