Structural Beam Design Guide

This document provides the design details for the reinforcement of a secondary beam. The beam has a width of 300mm, overall depth of 400mm, and clear cover of 30mm. 5 bars of 20mm diameter rebar are required. Shear reinforcement of 2-legged 6mm diameter vertical stirrups spaced at 75mm centers is also designed to resist the factored shear force of 84.575kN. All requirements for strength, serviceability, and code compliance are checked and satisfied.

Detail design of secondary beam

Width (b) = 300 mm

overall depth(D)= 400 mm

clear cover = 30 mm

stirrup = 8 mm

bar = 20 mm

effective cover = 48 mm

effective depth= 352 mm

grade of conc(Fck)= 25 N/mm2

grade of steel (Fy)= 500 N/mm2

rebar dia= 16 mm

length of beam= 3810 mm

breadth/depth= 0.75 >0.3, OK

factored shear force = 84.575 KN ( From ETAB )

factored moment = 65.7699 KNm ( From ETAB)

calculations of reinforcement details

factored moment(Mu) = 65.7699 KNm

Since, Mu< Mu, lim.So, Design as singly reinforced
section
Mu ,lim = 0.133 Fck bd^2 = 159.6 KNm

Xu,max/d = 0.48

Now,

Xu,max = 168.96 mm

Mu,lim = 0.87* Fy* Ast1*(d-0.42*Xu,max)

Ast= 1305.510708 mm2

provide 20mm dia bar

number of bars required = 4.155 = 5 nos.

hence, provide 5-20mm dia bar

Ast provided = 1570.75 mm2

check for max. and min. reinforcement required

Ast max. = 4% of b*D = 4800 mm2 < Ast provided ,ok

Ast min. = 0.85*b*d/fy = 179.52 mm2 > Ast provided , ok

CHECK FOR DEFLECTION
IS 456:2000 CLAUSE 23.2.1
Basic ( span/d) = 20
for no flanged section,
K1 = 1
for tensile reinforcement,
fs = 149.2962279
Pt = 0.892471591
from IS 456;2000 CLAUSE 23.2.1
modification factor (K2) = 1.213
for No compression reinforcement,
from IS 456;2000 CLAUSE 23.2.1
modification factor (K3) = 1
(span/depth)max = K1*K2*K3*BASIC VALUE = 24.26
(span/depth)provided = ( span / depth) =10.82386364 <24.26 , ok
hence, the beam is safe in deflection
Design of shear reinforcement
Nominal shear stress (Tv) = Vu/b*d = 0.800899621 N/mm2
percentage of steel (Pt) = Ast/b*d*100 = 0.892471591
from IS 456:2000, TABLE 20
FOR M25,
Tc, max = 3.1 N/mm2
from IS 456:2000,TABLE 19
FOR M25 AND Pt=0.8924,
Tc = 0.61 N/mm2
here, Tc<Tv<Tc,max so, Shear reinforcement is to be design

Total Shear Force(Vu) = 84575 N

Shear Force resisted by Concrete = 64416 N
Shear force to be resisted by reinforcement(Vus) = 20159 N
provide 2-legged 6mm dia vertical stirrups and fe250 steel
from IS 456:2000,clause 40.4
for vertical stirrups,
Vus =0.87fyAsv*d/Sv
Here,
fy = 250 N/mm2
Vus = 231661 N
Asv =2*3.1415/4*d^2 = 56.547 mm2
d = 352 mm
Then,
Sv = 37.37563353 mm

CHECK FOR MAX. SPACING

Max. spacing = 0.75 *d or 300 mm , whichever is lesser
0.75*d = 264 mm
hence, provide spacing = 75mm
hence, provide 2-legged 6mm vertical stirrups @ 75mm
C/C spacing.
