A4-Week-7 ETHICS

The document discusses a case study about the influences of law, religion, and culture on one's actions. It asks the student to discuss their own experiences and which factor has been most influential. It also asks the student to research an actual conflict between these three institutions, such as when religious traditions object to laws or laws disadvantage cultures. The student discusses how growing up in a culture of showing respect to elders through "mano" has been most influential. As an example of conflict, the student analyzes martial law in the Philippines and the resulting extrajudicial killings, which went against religious teachings not to kill. The student argues for considering all perspectives and finding solutions like social programs instead of measures like martial law that violate human rights.

STUDY TO SHEW THYSELF APPROVED UNTO GOD,
A workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
(II Timothy 2:15)

✓ ACTIVITY #7 CASE STUDY #

Name: CRISTEL ANN L. DOTIMAS Year and Section: BSA-2

Tasks:

1. EXPERIENCE
In your own experience, which of the three-law, religion, culture-do you think has been the
most influential, in terms of it directing you to act in certain ways rather than others?

- For me, it's culture because I'm not very knowledgeable about religious beliefs, and I don't know
much about the laws of our country yet. I only know that this is allowed, that is not allowed when
I have done or will do something. But in terms of culture, ever since I was a child, I have been
exposed to what should and should not be done. I guest, growing up with my grandparents, I can
probably say that I am more knowledgeable and influenced by culture when it comes to how to
act or make decisions about something.

- For example, the act of "pagmamano" towards elders, ever since I was young until now, it’s been
normal to do mano to elders even if I don't know them, as long as I encounter them, pagmamano
is the first thing to do, it’s like way of greetings to the elders. Its not in the law, no law mandates
me to do mano to elders but it’s a culture that I grew up with.

2. HARNESS
Our discussion of these three institutions-law, religion, and culture-in order to assess their
status as determinants of our ethical thinking discloses an ever-thornier problem.
Generally, everything is fine as long as these three are telling us the same thing, but what
happens when they disagree? What do we do when the clerics of a religious tradition object
to a law being proposed? What do we do when a law disadvantages certain cultures? What
do we do when emerging cultures claiming legitimacy stands at odds with certain religious
communities? Try to do some research on one such actual conflict.

- Conflict between law and religion

- Extrajudicial killings during martial law
- President Ferdinand E. Marcos signed Proclamation No. 1081 on September 21, 1972, placing the
Philippines under Martial Law.
- Under martial law, Criminals rate are decreased but human rights abuses and extrajudicial killing
increased which it against in what the bible says.
- “Thou shalt not kill” Sixth Commandment (Exodus 20:13)

- In these events, we must consider both parties perspective and come up with best solution.
Instead of resorting crime rate to something like martial law, which also has negative effects on
the country, why don't we provide assistance to those who are in need, such as free education,
tuition fees, 4Ps (Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program), and so on, so that they can realize that
the government is there to support them and they won't think of doing something wrong.
