Oral Communication Week 7:

What’s More:
Speech Title: What do you want to be?
Delivered by: Sabrina Ongkiko
(Speaker)
Observations/Strategies These are the following observations made:
used:
As to the First Principle of Choosing the Topic:

The topic is timely, as it discusses what an ordinary

people may experience. She provided examples of
real-life stories of her students to expound her points.

As to the Second Principle of Analyzing the

Audience:

It is evident that at the start of the speech, Sabrina

already had the attention of the audience. When she
asked a question, a lot of her audience shouted their
answers. The speech is very specific to the theme and
the message the speaker wants to convey.

As to the Third Principle of Sourcing the

Information:

The speaker did not mention any book authors,

newspaper articles and academic materials. She instead
used life stories which she witnessed herself through
her students. She also gave facts about herself that
transpired in the past, for instance, her wanting to be a
doctor or a member of the power rangers, when she
was young. These testimonies deserve more weight
and respect as those are things she is a witness herself.

Fourth Principle of Outlining and Organizing the

Speech Content:

I consider the speech, a Chronological Outline. Sabrina

started talking about her younger days until she is able
to share what she is now and what are the realizations
she had over time.
The real-life examples she provided are as well
arranged using a time table. Who those students before
and who have they become.

This piece is an unforgettable speech as these

ingredients are present: (1) It is personal; (2) It
educates; (3) Passion was shown; (4) It swayed the
emotions of the audience; (5) She never got out of the
topic and it was delivered briefly; (6) She is aware of
how the audience would react, and how to get their
attention.
Powerful line/lines: The following are the top three powerful lines in the
speech as it appears to my senses:

 Ngunit hindi rin naman natatapos ang kwento

kapag nakagawa ka na ng isang malaking
desisyon. Oh, Teacher nako, tapos? Kailangan
mo ulit panindigan ang malaking desisyon mong
ito gamit ang maliliit na desisyon na ginagawa
mo araw-araw.

 Pinili man o pinilit pare-pareho kaming mag

dedesisyon kung anong klaseng teacher ang
gusto naming maging.

 Ang batang pinakamahirap mahalin ang syang

dapat at pinakakailangan ng pagmamahal.
Oral Communication Week 8
Activity 2. Let’s write!

Let me ask a question: Why do you want to finish your education? Everyone
can shout your answers. (Let the audience answer) Interesting! We all have our
own reasons.

You might have heard of this already, but for those who didn’t, it is a
famous quotation from Malcolm X, a prominent and influential figure during the
civil rights movement. He said that, “education is the passport to the future, for
tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” Us, who took the chance, are
driven by a general purpose, that is – to own our future, to own our tomorrow. That
phrase is still too general isn’t it? When we say, we want to own tomorrow, I think
it is clear that it means we want to be successful. That is rather a vision and not a
mission. It is the end result and not a mission. A mission is something that we must
do in order to achieve that vision.

My mission is to make sure that my parents’ money and efforts are not going
nowhere. They have invested on my future through education. However,
investments are useless if the manager is careless and negligent. In our case, we
manage the investment of our parents. The results are up to us. In order to manage
their resources well, specifically to their investment in our education, we have to
make sure that we pass every subject with flying colors if we can.

This can be achieved if we:

(1) read our books, listen to our teacher’s discussion and review them when
necessary. In that way, we can enrich ourselves with the subject matter.
During examinations, it will not be difficult for us to review;

(2) maintain a good attendance and student reputation. It is true that we go to

school, not only to become intellectually capable but as well as to grow our
virtues;

(3) be responsible in deciding. Whether to do an act or not, are decisions we

make out of our own volition. In whatever decisions we make, we have to
think carefully. For instance, there will be situations when your friends
invite you out during class hours. The decision you will make will impact
your parents’ investment on your future.

I am grateful rather than lucky, that my parents send me to school. There are
those who may have more in life that are enrolled in prestigious universities where
they get the best. While there may be those who has nothing in life, who wants to
be somebody, but unfortunate enough to get their chances because of poverty.
There may as well be people, who has everything in life, and had a chance to a
good education but chooses not to take them. I’d stay with my belief that the
education my parents gave me is my saving grace in the future. And to sum
everything up, our part is necessary for their investments to be fruitful. Our
mission is to: read our books, listen to our teacher’s discussion and review them
when necessary; maintain a good attendance and student reputation; and be
responsible in deciding. As long as these are carried out, our parents’ investment
gets the most dividend.

Out of the ten survey questionnaires floated on their most frequently visited
internet sites, 8 out of 10 answered for Facebook, only one for Instagram and only
one for Youtube. These findings give us the following material conclusions: (1)
that most teenagers use Facebook to communicate and share their thoughts online;
(2) that teenagers prefer to interact with other people real-time rather than
watching recorded videos; (3) that 80% of our teenagers own a Facebook account.

What I Can Do

Started in the beginning of the year 2020, the Philippines felt the impact of
the Novel Corona Virus. Luna’s article in The Philippine Star confirmed the
presence of the virus in the Philippines. To quote: “The Philippines saw the first
confirmed death from COVID-19 outside mainland China announced. The case
was that of a 44-year-old male who was the companion of the first confirmed case
in the country; both are Chinese nationals from Wuhan who had arrived in the
country via Hong Kong on 21 January. He had been in stable condition prior to
his death on 1 February.”1 This prompted government officials to fully implement
lock downs and community quarantines nationwide. Since public and private
schools were closed to protect the health of learners and educators, teaching had to
be performed remotely with the use of modular and digital platforms. 2 Authorities
have resulted to pure modular, pure online and blended learning as modalities
during the Covid-19 Pandemic. At first, I do not know how it feels as I do not have
any idea on how it will go. My parents and I have chosen the blended learning.
Blended learning (also known as hybrid learning) is a method of teaching that
integrates technology and digital media with traditional instructor-led classroom
activities, giving students more flexibility to customize their learning experiences. 3
When I was given a lot of modules to answer, I was overwhelmed. I thought I can
never finish them. I was nervous rather than excited. It freaked me out.

The comfort of our homes made learning easy. You do not have to wake up
so early in the morning every day to attend school. Our home became my school. I
also saved money for allowance, as I do not have to spend for travel fare, snacks
and lunch. In other words, I can better control my time than how it was during face
to face learning. At first, I was nervous. It got away when I got used to it.

Following instructions online became easier. As time flies, everybody have
adjusted to the digital platform.
On another note, there were more activities given as way of applying the
things we have learned. The modules, no matter how numerous they may be
provided us great practice in writing and expressing our thoughts. That made me
look forward to the next modules and lessons that our teacher would assign. It was
at first very difficult but as time marched, I think everybody got used to it.

Truly, there is nothing to be afraid of, as we can continue to learn during this
pandemic. Secretary of Education, Hon. Briones said that education must continue
under the health protocols set by the Department of Health and the World Health
Organization.4 She is correct. Although at first, it can be scary and overwhelming.
This is something that we also have felt when we first entered our classrooms
when we were young. We cry if we do not see our parents. As time marched
forward, we learned to go to school on our own. Now, we are learning to go to
school by not going there physically, but digitally for our health’s sake. It was
rather more comfortable rather than terrifying. It rather made us productive.
Indeed, when the world changes, there is nothing we can do than to dance with it.

What I know
Activity 1.1

The editorial cartoon in the picture depicts the reality of global inequality. It
shows that the wealth of a very few is just equal to the aggregate of wealth of all
the remaining people in the world. To give it a deeper understanding by way of
example, the 3.5 Billion poorest in the country has 1.7 Trillion pesos if they are
taken in total, meaning if their wealth is summed up together. On the other hand,
85 rich people has the same amount of wealth. As a result, the wealthy ones are
controlling the world. In the same way, if we are to take nations as characters.
Those under-developed and developing countries became a slave of those
developed ones. They run the world. There is thus, an inequality in the distribution
of wealth in the global context.

What’s In
Activity 1.2: Concept Map

1. By increasing our dollar reserves through the import of dollar by the

overseas Filipino workers which are controlling factors in the exchange rate;
2. Through educational reforms which will surely decrease unemployment and
more room for new knowledge and researches;
3. By supporting local economic activities such as buying of Filipino made
products to booster and improve our economic condition; and
4. By creating businesses and other economic activities that would lead to
more employment and productivity.
UCSP Week 6
Summative Assessment

January of 2020 when the the first case of Covid-19 in the Philippines was
recorded. After this, the Filipino people, especially the poor has experienced many
unfortunate events and phenomenon.

Before the nation-wide lock down was implemented on March 2020, people with
extra cash hoarded face mask, face shields, alcohol, and food in groceries, malls,
food stalls and convenience stores. These people are those who has more than
enough to sustain their lives in the next months, were life remains uncertain.
Rosalie, who just got fired from her job after failing her training in a BPO
Company in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, said that “I almost did not eat anything in
the first week of the lockdown.” Rosalie explained that she had no savings and
money to buy items she need during the lockdown. She added that it was difficult
to find a job due to businesses are closed at that moment.

This pandemic made the poor in this country poorer. While it gave those who has
more in life an opportunity to become richer. Owners of drug stores doubled their
income. Hospitals and manufacturers of testing kits had more income than usual.
Face shield and mask manufacturers and re-sellers took the opportunity to double
their production to cater public demands. Government corrupt officials were given
enough chance to get people’s money away due to the vaccination expenditures
that this country needs.

While the Philippines suffer, developing countries has profited at our expense. The
pandemic did not only make the world suffer, it made life even more unfair.
