FS=
∑ (c . ∆ l+Wcosα . tan ∅ ) = 894.228 =1.66
∑ Wsinα 538.188
b) Simplified Bishop’s method:
c . ∆ l . cosα+Wtan ∅
∑ 1
In this method, we calculate FS using formula: cosα + sinα . tan ∅ ………………(i)
FS
FS=
∑ Wsinα
In eq(i), we can see that there is FS in RHS also, so we need a trial value of FS and perform a iteration until the assumed
trial FS matches
△ the calculated FS.

To start the iteration, first FS=1 is assumed.

We can see that calculated FS is vastly different from assumed one. So, we need to perform second iteration.
In second trial, we assume FS=1.527756(i.e. FS calculated at the end of first trial)

FS=1.744

*Conclusion: We can see the FS calculated using ordinary method of slices and Bishop’s simplified methods are very
different. Among both, Bishop’s method is more accurate one.
