Science 9

This lesson plan aims to teach students about species extinction and environmental issues. Students will brainstorm organisms and locations, discuss causes of population decline, and identify causes of species extinction by matching pictures to categories. They will analyze local environmental problems in small groups and present outputs using graphic organizers. Students will explain how these issues affect species and discuss prevention. Finally, they will make posters about environmental awareness and complete an activity in their textbook.

LESSON PLAN in SCIENCE 9

Name of Teacher: JUDILYN P. JUAB -ARGUILLA

Grade Level : Grade 9
Quarter: First Quarter
I. OBJECTIVES
A. CONTENT STANDARD The learners demonstrate an understanding of how changes in the
environment may affect species extinction.
B.PERFORMANCE STANDARD The learners should be able to make a poster showing environmental
awareness of extinction of representative microorganisms, plants, and
animals.
C. LEARNING COMPETENCY AND CODE Relate species extinction to the failure of populations of organisms to
adapt to abrupt changes in the environment; S9LT-Ie-f-30
At the end of
the lesson the student should be able to : 1.Identify local
and global environmental issues that affect the species extinction;
2.make a poster showing
environmental awareness; and
3. develop awareness on the importance of
biological diversity.

II. CONTENT Local and Global Environmental Issues That Affect Species Extinction
III.LEARNING RESOURCES
A. REFERENCE
1. TEACHING GUIDE Science book pp.50-69
2. LEARNERS MATERIAL / TEXTBOOK Activity sheets, manila paper ,
3.ADDITIONAL MATERIAL FROM LR
PORTAL
B . OTHER LEARNING RESOURCES Internet
IV.PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing a lesson or presenting a ELICIT
new lesson Teaching Strategy: Brainstorming
Picture of arganisms are to be presented to the class.Student will
guess the name of the organism in the picture and the location where
each one is associated. Nowadays, can we still see a tarsier , how about a
pawikan?

B. Establishing Purpose for the lesson ENGAGE

Did their population increase or decrease?
What could have caused the decrease in their
number?
C. Presenting example/instances of the Photo Quiz:The words in the box are some of the causes of species
new lesson extinction. Look at the pictures below and identify which cause of
extinction matches each group of pictures.

Taking animals for profit Introduction of species

Hunting andTrapping Destruction of habitat
Overharvesting Pollution

D.Discussing a new concepts and

practicing a new skills #1
EXPLORE Activity
1:The class will be devided into 6 groups . Each group will be given an
environmental problem in the community . (Refer to the worksheet
1).Analyze the problem.Determine the effects of the problem, possible
solutions and the action taken by the government to remedy the
situation.
Let the students present their output using different graphic organizer.
Group 1-
Deforestation(News Casting)
Group 2-Wildlife Depletion(jingle)
Group 3-Water Pollution (poem)
Group 4-Air Pollution (song)
Group 5-Destruction of Coastal Resources(talkshow)
Group 6-Acid Precipitation (news casting)

F.Developing Mastery(Leads to EXPLAIN

formative assessment 3)
How do these enironmental problems affect to the species?
How can you help in preventing these
environmental problems? What are the main causes of the local
environmental issues? How about the global environmental issues.

G. Finding practical applications of ELABORATE The

concepts and skills in daily living students will make a poster about environmental awareness. Using these
theme "A Small Act with big Impacts to Save our Earth"

H. Making generalizations and EVALUATE

abstractions about the lesson C. Read
and analyze the given statements carefully.
_______________1. As a consequence of cutting down trees, we
experience soil erosion,
floods, and a decrease in wildlife resources.
_______________2. Fishkill usually happens when there is an increase in
the
concentration of organic nutrients that comes from garbage and
factories.
_______________3. The numbers of species decrease because of habitat
loss caused
by invasion of human to its natural habitat.
_______________4. Cars burn fuel and factories emit harmful gases like
carbon
dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons that contribute to the
increasing temperature within the earth’s surface.
_______________5. Overharvesting, damaged mangrove areas, dynamite
fishing, and
muro-ami are the causes of marine life destruction.
_______________6. It is a result of air pollution mostly from factories and
motor
vehicles.
B.Explain briefly: As a youth for Environment in School's (YES-O) member,
how can you help in promoting environmental awareness.

EXTEND Let the student

perform the Activity 4 in the Learners module pages 60-68. Each group
will be assigned a specific task to be performed.
Group 1-brochure making
Group 2-
Pop up making
Group 3- Big book making
Group 4 and 5-Powerpoint presentation
