Importance of Moral Values in Student Life
Abstract:
Students are the future of India. The future of our country depends upon the
moral values imparted to them during their student life. Moral lessons should be
properly implemented among students in school and colleges.
Moral values are the standards of good and evil, which govern an individual’s
behavior and choices. Individual’s morals may derive from society and
government, religion, or self. When moral values derive from society and
government they, of necessity, may change as the laws and morals of the society
change.
Education is the conscious and deliberate process in which one personality acts
upon another in alone their order to modify the development of the other by the
communication and manipulation of knowledge. Our system of education leads to
the development of the mind, body and soul. Value education is an important part
of education. By value education we refer to planned educational action aimed at
the development of proper attitudes, values, emotions and character in the learners.
On the other hand, value education is a process of helping the individuals to think
freely and critically and act responsibly and with courage and conviction.
Children have an immense power of observation and their feelings are deep
rooted. They always observe their parents at home and their teachers in school. If a
child observes his teachers to be truthful and honest, he shall also imbibe some of
their virtues. In schools the textbooks ought to be based on symbolic stories. Mere
platform lecture by teachers on the values of truth and honesty would bear no fruit.
In this full paper focus the detailed importance of moral values, suggestions,
conclusion.
Introduction:
Students are the future of India. The future of our country depends upon the moral
values imparted to them during their student life. Moral lessons should be properly
implemented among students in school and colleges.
Children have an immense power of observation and their feelings are deep rooted.
They always observe their parents at home and their teachers in school. If a child
observes his teachers to be truthful and honest, he shall also imbibe some of their
virtues. In schools the textbooks ought to be based on symbolic stories. Mere
platform lecture by teachers on the values of truth and honesty would bear no fruit.
Moral values are one basis on which we make decisions–right or wrong? good or
evil? Other bases are financial, convenient, aesthetic (an artist), arbitrary (flipping
a coin), physical/health, rational (investigating a product before buying).
Moral values are the standards of good and evil, which govern an individual’s
behavior and choices. Individual’s morals may derive from society and
government, religion, or self. When moral values derive from society and
government they, of necessity, may change as the laws and morals of the society
change. An example of the impact of changing laws on moral values may be seen
in the case of marriage vs. “living together.”
In past generations, it was rare to see couples who lived together without the
benefit of a legal matrimonial ceremony. In recent years, couples that set up
household without marriage are nearly as plentiful as traditional married couples.
But, not only are such couples more plentiful, they are also more accepted by other
individuals in our society. In earlier society, the laws and morals simply came from
the Roman system of law, which was largely based on the Ten Commandments. As
society moved into the modern era, that earlier system of laws became more and
more eroded.
Moral values also derive from within one’s own self. This is clearly
demonstrated in the behavior of older infants and young toddlers. If a child has
been forbidden to touch or take a certain object early on, they know enough to
slowly look over their shoulder to see if they are being observed before touching
said object. There is no need for this behavior to be taught; it is instinctive. Once,
however, any form of discipline is applied to modify the child’s behavior, the child
now gains the capacity within himself to distinguish his right behavior from his
wrong behavior. Now, the child can make correct choices based on his own
knowledge. The choices that are made by an individual from childhood to
adulthood are between forbidden and acceptable, kind or cruel, generous or selfish.
A person may, under any given set of circumstances, decide to do what is
forbidden. If this individual possesses moral values, going against them usually
produces guilt.
The moral values in life hold great importance from the point of personal,
social and spiritual development. Values, morals and ethics are inextricably tied
together. Values are what we learn from childhood; the 'stuff' we acquired from our
parents and immediate surroundings. Values are the motive power behind
purposeful action. Moral values are meant for making the quest to find the higher
self an easier. Unfortunately, many amongst us may find it difficult to follow
values such as truthfulness, honesty, forgiveness in our lives because we have not
perceived the subtle gains that come to us by following these values. Or, maybe,
we are careless to realize the importance of values in life. Ethics, on the other
hand, are how we actually do behave in the face of difficult situations that test our
moral fiber. Ethics are the code or principles on which one’s character depend.
Ethics and character are closely related. Values are essential to ethics develop at an
early age and can be instrumental to building character.
At present, life is, day by day, becoming complex and complicated crisis in
character. As a result loss of values is reflected always in every sphere of human
life. Standards of moral life of people are gradually declining. The norm of family,
society, politics, secularism, democracy are going down and continuing under
strain. Wide spread disturbance, chaos, confusion and dislocation in life have
become common phenomena. People sticking on to higher ideals are very rarely
found. Contradiction in living is the order of the day. Deteriorating conditions of
the system of values and ethics in our daily life are realized. Different Educational
Commissions and committees in our country have expressed their deep concern
over the declining values in human activities and emphasized on providing value
oriented education. The NATIONAL POLICY ON EDUCATION-1986 has
categorically stated “The growing concern over erosion of essential values has
brought to focus the need for readjustment in the curriculum in order to make
education a forceful tool for the cultivation of moral and social values”.
THE EDUCATION COMMISSION OF 1964-66 says “A serious defect in the
school curriculum is the absence of provision for education in social, moral and
spiritual values. In the life of the majority of Indians, religion is a great motivating
force and is intimately bound up with the formation of character and inculcation of
ethical values. A national system of education related to life needs and aspirations
of the people can not afford to ignore this purposeful force”.
Moral values are must in student’s life
Worthy principal, teachers and my dear friends good morning today I palash
Mandal head boy of the school, stand before you to give a speech on moral values
are must in a student's life.
It would not be inappropriate if we say that moral values from our lives are slowly
disappearing. Those days are gone when we all are keen to help our neighbours at
their struggling moment, to victims of any difficulty and needy persons of our
society. Today if a person meets any serious accident, no one takes the risk to take
him to the hospital, but first his luggage or goods get robbed or captured.
Moral values are the basic of our goodness and if we use them they give us
unexplainable joy. You will agree with me that we can't measure this intensity of
joy. But if we feel it, it would give us a sense of relief and contentment that is class
apart. Moral values are a must in a student's life since he or she has yet to face the
harsh realities of life. Secondly, these moral values are not one sided but give
immense content to those when exercise them and those for whom the exercised
helping a blind man to cross the road, giving food to the really hungry, consoling a
baby like mother Teresa, consoling a really depressed person or sharing one's grief,
are invaluable services born of these moral values.
I earnestly request the students to enrich their moral vision by putting these values
in practice. It doesn't tax one's pocket to use them but it increases love, affection,
give and take and mutual understanding between people. Paying respects to the
elders, showing politeness to the small kids, helping the needy etc, are what we, as
students, need the most. This also shows the manners and also the quality of our
background. Live for others will not minimize your ego but it will increase the
love, respect, and personality for you in others heart.
Suggestions:
Understand the differences between the values, morals and ethics of the
other person. If there is conflict between these, then they probably have it
hidden from themselves and you may carefully use these as a lever.
Beware of transgressing the other person’s morals, as this is particularly how
they will judge you.
Talking about professional ethics puts you on a high moral platform and
encourages the other person to either join you or look up to you.
Conclusion:
Teachers are the source of inspiration for students. The relationship between
student and teacher is very strong . The moral education can be taught at
educational institutions. Our curriculum may include the study of life biographies
of great personalities who followed the right path in life.
