3AEX0 Electromagnetism 2023/2024 Q3
Homework problems for Student-Led Tutorial sessions
Week 5 (presented in week 6)
Problem 1: Discussion questions
(a) Find at least three similarities and three differences between electric field lines and mag-
netic field lines.
(b) A current runs through an infinite straight wire along the z-axis in the positive ẑ direction.
Sketch the magnetic field lines both in the xy plane and the xz plane. Make a 3D sketch
of the magnetic field lines. Make sure to indicate the direction of the field lines in all three
sketches. p
(c) Determine the unit and numerical value of 1/ϵ0 µ0 and suggest a physical interpretation
of your result.
Problem 2: 3D wire loop
A wire is bent into a three dimensional wire loop, consisting
of a quarter circle with radius R in the yz-plane, in the zx-
plane and in the xy-plane. A current I is supplied by two
straight lead wires along the y-axis (between y = R and
y = ∞), such that the current flows in +ϕ direction in the
xy-plane.
(a) Argue why the lead wires do not contribute to the mag-
netic field in the origin.
(b) Determine by reasoning (no detailed calculation yet),
what the direction of the magnetic field is in the origin.
(c) Determine a vector expression for the magnetic field B ⃗ in the origin. Prove explicitly that
the unit of your expression is the right one for a magnetic field.
Problem 3: Wrapped solenoids
Two very long solenoids are stacked into each other
parallel to the z-axis. The inner solenoid with ra-
dius R has its symmetry axis crossing the xy-plane at
y = R, winding density 2n and is carrying a current
2I. The outer solenoid with radius 3R is symmetric
around the z-axis, has winding density n and is car-
rying a current −3I, which means that the direction
of the current is opposite to the inner solenoid.
(a) Argue why the magnetic field field in the out-
side region (1), at r > 3R must be zero.
(b) Argue why the magnetic field must be purely in
z-direction in the region between the solenoid
(2) and inside of the inner solenoid (3).
(c) Determine vector expressions for the magnetic field in the region between the solenoids (2)
and in the region inside the inner solenoid (3).
(d) Make a sketch in the xy-plane and indicate the magnetic field using field lines.
