VII. Reflection (minimum of 100 words)
- Darts are typically used in the bust area, waistline, and
back of dresses, tops, and skirts to shape them around the
body's contours. Darts enhance garments by creating style
lines, which is a seam that gives clothing a unique or distinct
look. Stretch fabrics do not need darts since they already
provide shape and fit. A waist dart helps to reduce fullness
across the waist and narrows the waistline. It can be used for
various reasons, but typically it's used in fitted garments to
help tailor a garment more closely to an individual's shape.
Dart manipulation is one of the most important techniques
when it comes to pattern drafting. The shape and fit of
garments depend on darts and while they are needed to help
garments stay in shape, they can also be used as a design
element so knowing how to move darts will be beneficial. I
understand that darts are folds (tucks coming to a point) sewn
into fabric to take in ease and provide shape to a garment,
especially for a woman's bust.
