ShockDisplay curve 2 INTRODUCTION

1.3 FUNCTIONALITY

The MONILOG® ShockDisplay curve 2 is a universal data logger. Developed for long-term
measurement applications, it is perfectly suited for the monitoring of transport goods and critical
environments.

The integrated sensor system for the detection of shock events and inclination measurement
enables a wide range of different measurement applications. Configured alarm thresholds ensure
the reliable detection of exceedances of limit values. Shock loads are recorded and evaluated in
real time.

The compact and network-independent design enables

simple fixing on or in transport goods and transport devices. The
case of the device protects against dust and splash water (degree
of protection IP67) and thus is also suitable for the exterior use.
Thanks to this, the MONILOG® ShockDisplay curve 2 can be
used as an almost invisible goods companion in the international
transport of goods, in storage rooms, at reloading points and
during transport by the rail, by the roads as well as by water and
by air.

The power supply is implemented by standard, exchangeable alkaline-manganese or lithium

batteries. Thanks to very low current consumption and associated long, maintenance-free
operating time, the MONILOG® ShockDisplay curve 2 is perfectly suited for self-sufficient long-
term applications. Energy-optimised operating settings render possible a self-sufficient operational
time of typically one year under rough ambient conditions(depending on settings).

With the four buttons and the LCD display on the front, the full scope of the device can be used
via menu control. The stored data is displayed by showing the main parameters date, time,
maximum shock amplitude, shock duration and shock strength. Another menu window shows the
number of synchronized measured values (inclination) and the associated measured values with
date and time. Switching on and off as well as changing the measurement parameters can be
password-protected.

For the clear reproducibility of the operating status, every activity relevant to the recording of
measured values is recorded. A recording period indicates that the device is ready for
measurement with the associated measurement parameters and time specification.

The licence-free configuration software MONILOG® SYCUR enables a simple and intuitive
configuration of the devices. It offers a comprehensive adjustment of the device functions to your
application-specific requirements. Besides the detailed evaluation of the device data in measured

-6-
ShockDisplay curve 2 INTRODUCTION

value tables and graphs, the programme also provides export functions for external applications
(e.g. Microsoft Excel). Communication takes place via a USB interface.

With the status report function, an overview of the measurement data, including the division of all
impacts into acceleration classes and activities of the device, is created immediately without any
necessary settings.

As an alternative to the software, the device can also be configured with the four device buttons
(see chapter 3.3.2).

after it has been installed. This means that no early shock events are registered and the rest
position (zero position) of the inclination sensor is correctly determined.

3.3 DISPLAY MENU DESCRIPTION

3.3.1 Main menu

In the basic state, the number of recorded shocks (curve progression), the trigger counter, the
possible exceeding of an alarm threshold and the remaining battery charge in days are
displayed.

After pressing the button MODE , the switch-off menu is displayed. If you press SET in this menu, the
device switches off. If a switch-off password is defined, enter it when requested. Otherwise the
device remains switched on.

After pressing the button MODE

again, the menu of alarm events is displayed. In case of registered
limit value violations of a measuring channel activated for this purpose, you can scroll through the
alarm events with the buttons .

After pressing the button MODE again, the menu of the main parameters of all registered shocks is
displayed. With up to 500 shock events can be listed with the shock amplitude (amount of
the space vector) in g, the shock duration in ms, the integrated shock intensity in m/s, date and
time in chronological order.

If you press the button MODE again, the menu of the last recorded synchronous value data sets
appear, provided that synchronous measured values are available. Depending on the activation
and device variant, values for temperature, humidity, pressure, inclination, date and time are
displayed. With or all data records can be displayed sorted according to the time.

- 14 -

Start/stop time

The menu item start/stop time enables a delayed activation of the data recording. Start and a
stop time can be set and activated in the subordinate menu here. If the programmed start time is
reached in the switched-on device, the recording of shock and synchronous data begins. Events
that occurred before are ignored. In the period before the start time is reached, the display is
deactivated and only becomes active for a few seconds when a button is pressed. When the stop
time is reached, the device switches off automatically. When switched on again, full functionality
is restored.

A-measurement parameters

Via A-measurement parameters you can set the parameters for dynamic acceleration
measurement.
The registration threshold of the three measuring channels can be set separately in a
submenu in 0.1 g steps with .

- 16 -
ShockDisplay curve 2 DEVICE DESCRIPTION

The minimum shock duration, like the registration threshold, serves as a criterion for
recording shock events. Only those values are saved whose impact length is greater than the set
value (see 4.3.8 shock recording).
The setting of the limit values for the alarm display (alarm threshold) is carried out like the
setting of the recording threshold separately for each directional component The alarm threshold
has no influence on the recording of measured values but serves as an additional indicator for
user-defined limit values being exceeded. If the alarm display is not required, set the alarm limit to
“off”). The upper limit frequency of the signal recording can be selected using the "Shock
filter".

Synchronous parameters

Settings for the recording of measured values of the inclination sensor can be made under
synchronous parameters. The measuring channels activated in the submenu are then
recorded in the specified time interval.
In the Interval menu you set the recording interval for the synchronous measurement. The interval
from 1 min can be set in steps of one minute. It should be noted that frequent measurements will
reduce battery life. The expected “Remaining runtime” is adjusted dynamically. By setting “off”,
by reducing the interval below 1 min, the synchronous measurement is deactivated.
The position recording of the device can be activated in the Inclination submenu. The inclination
measurement is possible by setting “active” in the “Event” line. By activating the “Curve” line, a
recorded dynamic inclination measurement is started when a limit angle (“threshold”) is
exceeded. The threshold can be set in 1° steps between 3° and 90°.

Erase memory

The entire measurement data memory including the trigger counter can be erased in the submenu.
The configuration remains unchanged. You can switch between yes and no with SET and confirm
the command with MODE .

Battery new

The battery type is selected once to correctly display the expected battery charge of the device.
Underlined lines can be changed with MODE . This should be done after installing a new battery.

- 17 -
ShockDisplay curve 2 DEVICE DESCRIPTION

Mailbox

A message can be stored in the device in the Mailbox line. This note function has no influence on
the recording of measured values but appears in the table header when the data is evaluated
with the MONILOG® SYCUR evaluation program. Any text can be entered in the mailbox (e.g. for
the internal identification of your ShockDisplay curve 2).

Data / time

The time zone can be set here in ± 15-minute intervals. The system time can only be changed with
the MONILOG® SYCUR evaluation program.

- 18 -
ShockDisplay curve 2 DEVICE DESCRIPTION

3.4 DEVICE RUNTIME

The running time of the MONILOG® ShockDisplay curve 2 depends not only on the ambient
conditions and the shock frequency but also on the measurement parameters set and the type of
battery. The activation of the continuous inclination measurement is decisive here. The relationship
between device runtime and synchronous interval is illustrated in the following figure. The real
battery status is determined in the device during runtime and taking into account unforeseeable
events. A very small shock registration threshold can lead to frequent activation of the device and
thus to a reduction in the running time. It is therefore recommended to set at least a threshold of
5% of the measuring range.

Figure 2: estimation of the device runtime depending on the synchronous interval

If low battery is displayed during data transmission from the device with the MONILOG® SYCUR
evaluation software, insert new batteries before the next use.

- 19 -
ShockDisplay curve 2 DEVICE DESCRIPTION

3.5 BATTERY REPLACEMENT

Switch off the MONILOG® ShockDisplay curve 2 properly before replacing the battery. Otherwise
data loss from the device cannot be excluded.

Attention:
Ensure the right polarity when inserting the batteries!

ATTENTION!
Risk of explosion if the battery is replaced with the wrong type.
When using lithium batteries
Only use batteries that conform to UN 38.3, IEC 60086-4 and
IEC 60079-11 (intrinsically safe).
In case of non-compliance with the national regulations/laws applicable in the handling of lithium
batteries, any liability and warranty claim becomes void!

For the change of the battery proceed as follows:

1) Remove the battery cover and battery bridge by loosening the fastening screws by means of a
screw driver (cross recess, H size 2). You can then remove the used batteries.

2) Insert the new battery according to the specified polarity in the battery compartment.
When inserting the batteries, make sure that they spring slightly on the contacts in the device
and that the battery contact bridge also has 1 to 4 mm of spring travel.

3) Tighten the battery bridge with a maximum tightening torque of 0.75 Nm.

4) When putting on the cover, the position of the seal must be observed (sealing lip points into
the housing). The sealing surfaces must be checked for cleanliness. The maximum tightening
torque is 0.3 Nm.

5) Switch on the device.

6) Either follow the description in section 3.3.2 Configuration menu - Battery new or in section

4.2.3 File area

The data read out from a MONILOG® device can be saved as a file. A click on the “Save file”
button or the corresponding menu selection opens the save dialogue.

Figure 9: File area

Likewise, saved data can be read back again into the PC programme. The button “Load file”
opens the corresponding dialogue for the selection of the required file.

4.2.4 Message window (Log)

The message window, which can be found under Display/Messages, renders possible an
overview on the actions performed by means of the programme or the status changes of the
device during the established USB connection. Error messages and notes, e.g. for executing
configuration commands, connection establishment to devices, saving of data etc. are listed here.

4.3 MONILOG® ShockDisplay curve 2

4.3.1 Reading out status, configuration and

measurement data

After the connection to the MONILOG® ShockDisplay curve 2 has been successfully established,
the measurement data is automatically read out by the PC program. This can take up, depending
on the number of the data sets, a few seconds to several minutes. A progress bar shows the
current readout status. The transmission can be interrupted with the Cancel button. According to
the available measured values the corresponding programme tabs and graphs open. A detailed
description of the programme areas can be found in the following chapters.

Figure 14: overview window after reading out the measurement data from a
MONILOG® ShockDisplay curve 2

Please do not disconnect the USB cable from your PC or MONILOG® ShockDisplay curve 2, as
long as the data transmission takes place!

4.3.2 Save and export data

Always save the read-out measurement data in the original data format *.SDC2 via the menu
item „File/Save file“. Only this file contains all the measurement data and diagnostic
information that is also necessary for support.

In addition, a summary status report can be created in PDF format. Via menu item „File/Print
status report“ you first get a draft view. Via menu „Status report (.pdf)“ it can be saved
immediately as a PDF file. It is possible to limit the reporting period via the sliders at the top (see
Figure 16). A "limited reporting period" is then indicated in the status report.

4.3.3 Define the view period

With the view period (see Figure 16), the display of data can be restricted to the desired time
range.

This simplifies data analysis and the finding of certain events. Enter the desired start and end date
in the fields and confirm the entry using the green button to the right of the input fields. The
display period can also be adjusted using the slide bar by moving the blue bars with the
mouse (see Figure 16).

4.3.4 Status and thresholds

The Status tab shows the current status and thresholds of the device.

Figure 17: status and set configuration of a ShockDisplay curve 2

- 31 -

Status data

• Serial number: Device serial number (cannot be changed)

• Device name Freely selectable device identification

• Note: Field for programming a note in the device

• Transmitted: Current computer time when the device was read out
(current time zone related to UTC world time is displayed)

• Recording start: Beginning of the measurement recording by user (“running”)

or by measurement programme (date & time)

• Recording stop: End of the measurement recording by user (“infinite”) or by

measurement programme (date & time)

• Password configuration: Shows the current password status. Detailed display by

clicking on the info symbol (switch on, switch off,
configuration, read out data)

• Battery charge: Current percentage of battery charge and estimated

remaining time in days. Detailed display by clicking on the
info symbol .

• Battery voltage: Current voltage of the internal battery

Shock event thresholds:

• Measurement range: Available acceleration measurement range for each axis

• Shock amplitude x,y,z: Minimum acceleration amplitude (storage criterion) per

shock direction

• Min. shock duration: Minimum duration of the event (storage criterion)

The shock event must at least reach the specified values in order to be storable. This serves
to hide insignificant small shock events and thus not to unnecessarily load memory and
battery capacity.

• Shock filter: Cut-off frequency of the low-pass filter

Acquisition:

• Shock counter: Number of acceleration releases due to the device's trigger

threshold. Shocks that will not reach the set recording thresholds
(shock magnitude and shock duration) are rejected again. Thus, this
value is purely informative and signalises that events have been
registered by the device.

- 32 -
ShockDisplay curve 2 PC SOFTWARE – MONILOG® SYCUR

• Shock events: Recorded shock curves as a result of exceeding the registration

threshold for shock events (see Section 4.3.8)

• Shock alarm x,y,z: Limit values for the detection of alarms with indication in the display
and red marking in the shock table.

• Acquisition periods: Number of active periods started (see Section 4.3.5)

• Synchronous data: Number of continuously saved data sets for the activated inclination
measuring channel

• Synchronous interval: Time interval for time-synchronous (continuous) recording of the

measuring channels temperature, humidity, pressure, light and
inclination

• Inclination events: Number of inclination events as a result of the threshold being

exceeded for inclination (see Section 4.3.7). If the device tilts from
its zero position by the specified angle (e.g. 45°), a inclination
event is generated. The zero position is determined when the unit is
switched on.

• Threshold inclination: Limit value of the angle change in any direction for the recording of
inclination events. If (active + curve) is displayed, a curve is also
saved for the first 640 inclination events. (see section 4.3.7)

Notes on inclination events:

Since the inclination naturally overlaps with other movements and is subject to general scattering,
the minimum threshold is limited to an angle of 3°. Scanning takes place at 12 Hz over a time
window of 3 seconds, i.e. a faster inclination may not be recognized under certain
circumstances.

4.3.5 Acquisition periods

The acquisition periods offer an overview on the individual configuration time segments of the
MONILOG® ShockDisplay curve 2. In this way, it can be traced back how the device was
configured at the respective period of time.

Figure 18: Table with acquisition periods

- 33 -
ShockDisplay curve 2 PC SOFTWARE – MONILOG® SYCUR

The start and end time, the active time period and the reason which has led to the completion of
the acquisition period are shown. Moreover, all set thresholds and event channels for the period
and battery voltage are recorded. A new acquisition period begins when the device has been
switched on or configured or the USB was disconnected while it was switched on. Details on the
individual parameters are described in section 4.3.4.

4.3.6 Synchronous data

Inclination

Synchronous data are measured values that are continuously recorded synchronously at a fixed
interval. The data sets are shown consecutively in a table (see Figure 19).

Figure 19: view of synchronous data table

Inclination graph:

In the “Inclination graph” program tab the static inclination values of the synchronous data are
shown as a graph. By activating or deactivating the “check mark” in the legend on the right-hand
side, the x, y, z-channel can be switched on or off (see Figure 20). The static inclination can be
overlapped by accelerations that occur. The range that can be displayed is ± 2 g. To do this,
check the amount r. If it deviates significantly from 1 g, the actual position can no longer be
reliably determined.

- 34 -
ShockDisplay curve 2 PC SOFTWARE – MONILOG® SYCUR

Figure 20: view of inclination graph

Inclination angle:

For a better understanding of the orientation of the MONILOG® ShockDisplay curve 2, the graphic
representation of the three spatial angles in the style of analogue aircraft instruments is used. The
designations are based on the ENU reference system
(“Right-hand rule“, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft_principal_axes).

Calculation of the angle:

• Rotation around the x-axis: Roll angle Φ = arctan(y/z)

• Rotation around the y-axis: Pitch angle Θ = arctan(z/x)

• Rotation around the z-axis: Yaw angle Ψ = arctan(x/y)

When using this definition, the angles are not (0°, 0°, 0°) when the device is in the normal
position on the table but (0°, 90°, -). The roll angle is 0° as the z-axis points in the direction of the
earth's axis. The pitch angle is 90° as the x-axis is perpendicular to the earth's axis (namely
horizontally). The yaw angle (rotation around the z-axis) cannot be determined because the
acceleration due to gravity is almost zero for both reference axes (x- & y-axis).

Movement recorder

Shock events and shock curves are evaluated in the device using the configured threshold values
and saved as described in Section 4.3.8. In addition, the shock with the largest space vector (r) is
saved over the time window configured with the synchronous interval (see Figure 22).

Figure 22: configuration of the synchronous interval

4.3.7 Inclination events / inclination curves

Inclination events are registered in the “Inclination events” tab if the activated alarm threshold in
the “Configuration” tab (4.3.9) is exceeded (Figure 25, no. 1). If the check mark for inclination
curves is also activated, the curve-plot is also recorded (Figure 25, no. 2).

Figure 24: inclination alarm activation

The associated curve 2 can be called up by double-clicking on one of the table rows 1 .

Figure 25: inclination events table and inclination curves graph

- 37 -
ShockDisplay curve 2 PC SOFTWARE – MONILOG® SYCUR

In reality, inclination events often overlap with acceleration events. For inclination curves, check
whether the amount r has a curve of approximately 1 g. If this is the case, it is a “soft tilt” without
jerky movements. In the other case, a “vibration” or a shock process triggered the inclination
event. Depending on the signal frequency and strength, the shock sensor may have recorded a
curve.

The angle representation is also available for inclination curves. The representation of the
inclination curve can be filtered with a low-pass function (Figure 25, 3 ).

4.3.8 Shock events and shock curves

All shock events are listed in a table under the “Shock event table” programme tab (see Figure
26). The associated curve can be called up by double-clicking on the table row.

If the lower or upper alarm threshold is exceeded (see Figure 27), the measured value is
displayed in red. A warning threshold can be set under Settings/SYCUR settings (see Section
4.2.6 Settings). If this is exceeded, the corresponding measured value is displayed in orange. If a
measured value meets the warning threshold and alarm threshold, the measured value is
displayed in red.

Figure 26: shock event table

Figure 27 shock alarm setting

- 38 -
ShockDisplay curve 2 PC SOFTWARE – MONILOG® SYCUR

The recorded shock curves are shown as a graph in the “Shock events / Shock curve graph”
programme tab. By activating or deactivating the check marks in the legend on the right-hand
side, the corresponding curves for the x, y, z-channel and the amount can be shown or hidden
(see Figure 28).

In addition, by activating the low-pass function and entering the cut-off frequency, unwanted high-
frequency components can be filtered out of the view. This is a view option and does not change
the original data.

With the button “Display range: ± measuring range value g” the vertical diagram axis is switched
between the limits of the curve and the measuring range limits. By means of the button , the
curve is displayed completely again after zooming in from an enlarged section of the curve. The
„Comparison window“ button can be used to open several shock curves at the same time in
order to compare them.

Figure 28: shock curve graph

Shock recording:

The shock recording begins when the value of the acceleration exceeds the internal trigger
threshold on at least one measuring.

The measuring points are recorded continuously with a sampling rate according to the technical
data per measuring channel. Individual shock impacts are then selected from this. A shock impact
starts exceeding the internal registration threshold on at least one measurement channel and ends
when the main thrust (channel with the absolute maximum of shock) changes sign (zero crossing)
or all three channels fall below the internal registration threshold again. Within a curve several
shock impacts can occur, for example, by vibration.

- 39 -
ShockDisplay curve 2 PC SOFTWARE – MONILOG® SYCUR

The impact with the largest amplitude is evaluated at the end of a curve period and compared
with the configured criteria. A shock curve is permanently stored if the registration thresholds met
on at least one measurement channel and shock duration for this shock impact.

Impact 1 Impact 2

Figure 29: Evaluation of shock events

As a shock event is considered the largest single impact within the curve duration which meets all
the set conditions (amount of shock, shock duration) (in this example Figure 29 Impact 1). In
addition to the measurement of the three channels, a value for the space vector and integrated
value for the shock strength of this impact are calculated at each measurement point. The shock
strength is equivalent to the difference speed and is also available as a graph.

Shock analyzation

In the programme tab “Shock analyzation graph” there are several graphs available for signal
analysis of the shock curves. For the optimization of transport routes and packaging, transformed
frequency spectra are required, sometimes derived from the stored acceleration time curve. The
following functions are implemented for this purpose:

• Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT): Representation of the individual frequency components

of the signal

• Power Density Spectrum (PSD): Power density spectrum

- 40 -

• Vibration Response Spectrum (VRS): Vibration response Interesting for vibration analysis.
Indicates how a system behaves when it is excited by
vibrations. It is calculated here with quality 10

• Velocity change: Indicates the course of the velocity

• Octave analysis components of the signal for each measurement channel

X,Y,Z and for the space vector are displayed according
to EN 13011 in 8 frequency ranges

For further information, please refer to the transport monitoring manual available on the enclosed
USB mass storage device or to specialist literature and the relevant standards DIN EN 15433,

Acceleration progress

Recorded shock events with their maximum acceleration amplitudes are shown in a line graph
(Figure 32). This is a complete representation of the shock events over all recording periods. Here
you can zoom into the curve with the mouse. You can also display an alternative representation
of the space vector with the „Line chart“ selection field. By the button “Calculate average”
statistical values of acceleration are calculated on all shock events (all recorded curve
progressions). The “Export values” button exports the measuring points of all impact curves to a
TXT file. This enables alternative processing in other programs, e.g., Excel. The acceleration curve
can also be processed with a "Low pass". However, this does not apply to the „Line chart“ form
of representation.

Note:
The meaning of the individual setting fields is described in the chapter 4.3.4 „Status and
thresholds“.

Changing the device name

The device name can be changed in the “Device name” input field (see Figure 34). Up to 32
characters are available for the device name.

Figure 34: changing the device name / recording period

Setting the recording period:

The desired recording period for the device can likewise be set by the user (see Figure 34). When
a recording period is defined, the measured value recording at the start time begins. The
measured value recording will be terminated when the stop time is exceeded and the device
switches off If the input fields are left empty, the measurement recording is running a long as the
device is switched on.

The input of start time and stop time is made in local time in the date format:
dd.mm.yyyy hh:mm:ss
(day.month.year hour:minute:second)

Setting the device time

The device time can be set by selecting the time synchronization and clicking on “Send
configuration” (see Figure 35). The synchronisation is made by means of the system time of your
PC. Note that all other configuration parameters are also sent.

- 45 -
ShockDisplay curve 2 PC SOFTWARE – MONILOG® SYCUR

All time specifications are made in the PC programme according to the time zone setting of your
PC. Internally, the device works with the Universal Time Coordinated (UTC). Thus, a clear
temporal assignment of the events with a point in time is always possible.

Figure 35: Setting the device time

Changing the synchronous intervals:

The synchronous interval is set using the “Synchronous interval” selection fields (Figure 33, 1 ) in
hours and minutes. When set to 0 h and 0 min, there is no recording of time-synchronous
measured values.

Setting alarm events:

The input fields Figure 33 4 enable the parametrization of the alarm events. Based on the set
threshold values, alarm events are recognized if the exceeding or falling below the threshold
values is detected during the measurement run. A check mark in front of the input fields activates
the generation of alarm events. If alarm events have occurred, they are marked in red in the table
after the device has been read out.

Configure password and access rights:

The MONILOG® ShockDisplay curve 2 can be protected with up to two passwords, each with
different access rights. Each password can contain up to 8 characters. A new password can be
created by clicking the “Change with configuration” button. The new password setting is saved in
the device by clicking on the “Send configuration” button. A password can protect any number of
accesses to the device. If e.g. the configuration of the device is to be protected with a password,
the corresponding password will be requested the first time the configuration is attempted. After
successful entry, the configuration and all other password-protected accesses are activated for the
current session. A session lasts as long as the device is connected to the PC via USB and the
MONILOG® SYCUR programme has not been closed. In addition to the lock symbol , the
password can be given a name so that the password can be clearly assigned.

Note:
To remove a password, click on the symbol and enter the password in the new dialogue.

If you have lost one of the passwords, please follow the instructions in section 4.3.11 to request a
reset password.

Creation and use of ready-made configurations

If similar configuration parameters are to be used on several devices, the MONILOG® SYCUR
software offers the option of creating and loading configuration files. A configuration file can be
created by clicking the “Save configuration file” button. A configuration file (file extension .cfg) is
created from all parameters that are currently displayed in the configuration window. The storage
location of the file can be freely selected.

To configure several devices with the created configuration file, this can be read in using the
“Load configuration file” button and sent to the device with the “Send configuration” button if
there is an active USB connection with the device. The configuration file read in remains active in
the software until the configuration file or the software is closed. Active means that the parameters
read in from the configuration file are always displayed in the configuration window, which is
indicated by the addition of the file name in the tab. The actual, current device configuration is
still listed in the status window (see section 4.3.1).

Figure 39: “Configuration” tab without (left) and with loaded (right) configuration file

Changes to the configuration file can be made and transferred to the device. Changes made are
only temporary and are reset to the original content of the configuration file after the settings have
been successfully transferred.

4.3.10 Service information on the device

Via the menu item “Settings/device maintenance” you get additional information on the device,
which are required for support requests.

Figure 40: device maintenance

The time of the last device maintenance is displayed in “Device maintenance”. f the check mark is
set for “Automatic message?”, the MONILOG® SYCUR gives a message when the set maintenance
interval has been exceeded. The device maintenance settings are accepted with the “OK” button.

In order to achieve good and reproducible measuring accuracy, the device should be serviced
regularly.

4.3.11 Unlock the password

Via the menu item “Info/unlock password”, your standard email programme opens with a
prepared email. The email contains a device-specific key which is sent to the address
[email protected]. After validation of the device-specific key and verification of your
authorization by us, you will receive a time-limited reset password per email. The reset password
can be entered at any request to enter a password (e.g. when deleting a password) and resets all
passwords assigned in the device. New passwords can then be assigned as described in the
previous chapter.

ShockDisplay curve 2 FIRMWARE UPDATE

5. FIRMWARE UPDATE

5.1 PREPARATION

Through a firmware update, a MONILOG® ShockDisplay curve 2 receives a better software if this
update file is provided by the manufacturer.

Prior to the firmware update the following points must be observed:

• The update mode can only be activated if all passwords have been deactivated for the
MONILOG® ShockDisplay curve 2 and the device is switched off.

• Have ready the included mini USB cable and plug one end of the cable in a free USB port
of your computer for the preparation. Do not plug the USB cable into the
MONILOG® ShockDisplay curve 2 yet!

• Ensure that on your computer no MONILOG® PC programmes are executed.

Note:
Back up all measurement, diagnostics and configuration data of your device prior to the firmware
update to prevent a possible data loss. The memory is reset to default settings.

With the device switched off, press and hold MODE and SET at the same time until the
“BOOTLOADER” menu appears. Connect the USB cable to the device. The update mode is active
now. It remains active as long as the USB cable is connected. If the MODE or SET button is released
before the detection of the update mode, the device starts the normal operating mode or switches
off.

Proceed now with the instructions according to chapter 5.2 „CARRYING OUT UPDATE“.

- 50 -
ShockDisplay curve 2 FIRMWARE UPDATE

5.2 CARRYING OUT UPDATE

After you have started your MONILOG® device in the update mode, open the PC software. The PC
software should automatically detect the MONILOG®device which is in the update mode and open
a window to select an encrypted firmware file (“Encrypted Hex File”). After selecting, confirm the
warning with “Yes” and the update begins. The loading process must not be interrupted.

Figure 41: Firmware update warning

Figure 42: Firmware update

If the progress bar shows 100%, then the message of the successful completion of the update
appears.

Figure 43: Completion of the update process

The USB connection can be disconnected after the update process. If the update process fails, a
corresponding error message is displayed. The MONILOG® device switches itself off. Due to the
update interruption the device firmware could not be completely installed. In some circumstances,
the device is not switchable any more in the normal operating mode due to this. Please repeat the
update process according to the instructions of the entire chapter 5 „Firmware update“.
