DRY FIRE DRILLS AND EXERCISEs
Proper methods and techniques in firearms handling shall be imparted
to the students before they are allowed to proceed to the actual and live firing
exercises. Familiarizing them with the procedures will entail accurate
execution as exercises become complex and difficult. The instructor must see
to it that each student/trainee observes the procedure as it would be his/her
foundation in proceeding to the course (UCRWC Instructional Manual, 2014)
The instructor may start with step-by-step demonstrations coupled
with proper counting for the beginners to precisely see the movements and
prepare them for their return demonstrations. As the movements become
automatic among the students, counting maybe reduced until it becomes one
DRAW FROM HOLSTER EXERCISE
This is an exercise in preparation for the Draw and Basic Firing. In
this drill, the student is at an aggressive stance His/her shoulders, neck and
arms are already locked in a ready position. The wrist of strong hand feels the
grip of the holstered pistol as reference for his quick draw. The instructor
commands

✓ STAND BY

✓ READY

✓ ONE
The strong hand and weak hands move together. The strong hand
holds the grip of the pistol while weak hand moves nearer in level to the last
part of the right rib of the body. The palm of the weak hand is open and
prepared.
Two. The student draws pistol and observes positive grip. The weak
hand controls the strong hand. Both arms extend to aim at the target.
ONE HAND SHOOTING EXERCISE
The student observes the basic stance and locks in a body position. At a ready
position, the instructor kinematics the following

✓ STAND BY

✓ READY

✓ UP
As the student reacts in one count by drawing his/her pistol through
his/her strong hand, the left hand locks by resting on the breast while the
cheek rests on the muscle for better sight alignment.
STRONG HAND TO WEAK HAND EXERCISE
Almost all students/trainees consider their right hands to be stronger
than their left hands As such it is the right hand that is often times used in one
hand shooting
With a holster this exercise must be done in counting. The instructor
commands

✓ READY POSITION

✓ ON GUARD POSITION

✓ UP

✓ FIRE
After which, pistol shall be transferred to the weak hand and do the
same procedure
RIFLE EXERCISES

✓ The quick kill position serves as the on-guard position of Rifle drills and
exercises. At quick kill position every student observes the aggressive stance.
The following are emphasized.

✓ LOCK- The elbows are clipped and not sticking out the neck rests on the
butt of the rifle. The muzzle of the rifle is pointing to the ground in 45 degrees.

✓ SUPPORT GRIP-The elbow sticks to the body, why the left hand is on the
hand guard Sight. On targets ranging 10 meters or less, the rear sight of the
rifle should be placed at a V-shape position and the student must concentrate
on his front sight.

✓ TRIGGER CONTROL- Observe slack and squeeze slowly.

NIGHT FIRING
-This exercise is for the students/trainees to be familiar with the fundamentals
of night firing. The standard distance of this exercise is 7 and 12 meters with
four rounds each.
-At "on guard position" the exercise starts at 12 meters distance target board.
With flashlights, the instructor lights the board and commands "ready, up and
simultaneously puts off the light. The student/trainee fires double tap and goes
back to "on guard position "
STATIONARY FIRING, ON GUARD POSITION, SINGLE TAP AND
DOUBLE TAP
This position is done in a distance of 10 meters with four rounds for
single tap and six rounds for double tap. This exercise familiarizes the
students/trainees stationary firing at on guard position using single tap and on
double tap method. The head, shoulder and the neck should be locked and the
chin is slightly protruding outside the student should be at aggressive stance.
The left foot is slightly forwarded and the weight should be balanced and
concentrated at the center of gravity. The instructor commands "standby,
ready, up”.
Single tap requires every shooter to fire one shot and returns to "on
guard position " Double tap requires every shooter to fire at target and returns
to "on guard position
STATIONARY FIRING, DRAW AND FIRE
This position is done in a 10-meter distance using four rounds for
single tap and six rounds for double tap This exercise is aimed at familiarizing
the students/trainees on the techniques of draw and fire with emphasis on the
use of roll, heel, sight, slack and squeeze.
This exercise must be done through dry firing. It starts in Ready
Position in which the head, shoulders, and the neck must be in lock position,
the chin is slightly protruding outside while the hands are in relax manner. The
aggressive stance is used and where both feet are pointed straight to the target
board
Steps:
1 The student draws pistol, assisted by his/her left hand.
2 In "on guard position," proper gripping is emphasized, left hand controls the
right hand and pistol, while the right hand is relax probably at a zero strength.
3 At this count, the student aims the pistol but he/she should perform the
following exercises before doing a live firing. The instructor commands

✓ ROLL. The weak hand applies pressure parallel to the slide of the pistol,

✓ HEEL. The right thumb should press the safety of the pistol.

✓ SIGHT. The front sight must be aligned with the rear sight aimed at the
target.

✓ SLACK. The application of a slight pressure to the trigger is needed before

squeezing.
✓ SQUEEZE. The student squeezes the trigger up to five times
4 H the student performs well, the instructor may issue live
ammunitions for firing, four rounds for single tap and six rounds for double
tap. The instructor commands "standby, ready, up”.
PRACTICAL METHODS OF DRAWING FIREARM
1. WHEN WEARING JACKET- This is an activity that teaches students on
proper drawing of firearms when the possessor is wearing a jacket. The
student holds on to the other side of the jacket while drawing the pistol from
the holster.
2. WHEN WEARING SHIRT- With the student's weak-hand he/she holds on
to the shirt near the firearm and raises it while the strong hand draws the
firearm from the holster
3. WHEN FIREARM IS HOLSTERED (QUICK DRAW)- With the
student's strong-hand he/she unlock the holster and draw the firearm straight
up.
CLOSE QUARTER MANEUVERS
-The authors withdraw the details of this activity for the purpose of knowing
the fundamentals of room clearing. The following activities are designed.
DOOR CLEARING (BY SLICING THE PIE/QUICK SLICE)
This activity aims to teach the students the techniques of clearing
doors and rooms when the situation in doubtful or when an enemy knows that
an assault team is entering. Quick slice is a method of clearing the room
characterized by speed and aggressiveness. For education, the targets may be
arranged by the Instructors
The students position themselves on both sides of the door. The one
nearest to the door knob opens and pushes the door while the other points
his/her rifle at the door ready in case an enemy appears. When the door is
open, the students will start clearing the rooms, section by section like slicing
the pie. One of them shouts "Enter when meeting at the center and
immediately rush to the room going on opposite direction to clear the corners
When the room is cleared, one of them shouts "Clear" to signal the other team
members to enter.
BUTTON HOOK AND MODIFIED BUTTON HOOK
The Button Hook Technique is for closed doors. The assault team can
position at both sides of the door Since the door is closed, the team members
can cross in-front of the door.
The first student (no 1) executes the left hook and clears left side.
While the second student (no 2) executes the right hook and clears the right
side
The MODIFIED BUTTON HOOK TECHNIQUE is designed for open
doors as assault team cannot cross open doors. The first student (no 1)
executes the button hook and clears left side of the room while the second (no
2) proceeds to the right side of the room.
CRISS-CROSS/MODIFIED CRISS-CROSS
The CRISS-CROSS TECHNIQUE is applicable to closed doors.
The assault team may occupy both sides of the door the door and no 2 man at
the right side of the door Upon A point-man (no 1) is designated to occupy the
left side of the door and no. 2 man at the right side of the door. Upon entry, the
point-man (no 1) clears the right side of the room as no 2 man clears the left
side of the room resorting to a crisscross pattern of entry The shooters should
avoid crossing at the same time and the same side during entry.
The MODIFIED CRISSCROSS TECHNIQUE is applicable to an open-
door entry. The point-man (no 1) and no 2 occupy the left side of the door The
point-man (no 1) clears the left side of the door while no 2 man clears the right
side of the door.
CLOSE QUARTER BATTLE (CQB)
CQB MALFUNCTION DRILL
This is an exercise that is useful during door or room entry clearing
When the firearm of the first student no. 1) malfunctions during entry of
rooms, it must be treated immediately While the first student (no 1) is treating
the malfunction of his/her firearm the second student no 21 covers the first
student and engage his target.
Two rounds for designated target in double tap and two rounds to
engage in target to team mate who incurred malfunction in double tap
WINDOW CLEARING
This exercise is designed to familiarize the students with the proper
technique approach in window clearing.
Two rounds of ammunition shall be used. it must be done in the
following manner.

✓ Point-man (No. 1) secures the window and clear the right side of the room
while No 2 man secures No I man

✓ No. 2 man crosses the window and positions himself/herself at the other
side subsequently clears the left side of the room.

✓ No 1 and No 2 slowly meet at the center and clear the room.

The students fire double p at targets they encounter during clearing
maneuvers. The targets are previously arranged by the instructors.
STAIRWAY CLEARING
The primary weapon to be used is assault rifle. Pistols may be used as
back up weapon when the primary weapon cannot be used. The student loads
four rounds of the pistol when the rifle fails to operate. This can be done by
two-man team or four-man team.
JUDGMENTAL FIRING
The use of pistol on the judgmental firing exercise serves as a back-up
weapon only. The assault rifle shall be used for this drill Pistol will be used
when assault rifle malfunctions. This is applicable to a hostage-taking
situation which requires the students to use the final best option available
Scenarios shall be arranged by the instructor
INDIVIDUAL ASSAULT
This exercise requires the application techniques in room and door clearing.
Six rounds in double tap (3x) shall be done by every student in standing
kneeling and prone positions
PEEPING TOM
This exercise requires the use of primary and secondary weapons It
shall be done in the following manner.

✓ The student starts at Station 1 and fires through the window, by doing a twin
tap with the rifle target boards A and B The student shifts to pistol and fires
twin tap at Target C.
✓ The student/trainee proceeds to Station 2 and fire twin tap at targets D and E
using his/her rifle. The student then shifts to pistol and fires twin tap at Target
F

✓ The student/trainee proceeds to Station 3 and fire twin tap at the targets G
and H using his/her rifle, then shifts to pistol and fires twin tap to target I.

✓ The student/trainee proceeds to Station 4 and fires twin tap at target 5, shifts
to pistol and fire twin tap to targets K and L.
The instructor stops timer at this point and records the score, time and
procedurals.
