OUT OF THIS WORLD
a After years of research, an international team
of scientists claim they have found a world
beyond Earth that might be able to support
life. The planet, called Gliese 581g, is near the
middle of the “habitable zone” ofits parent
star, That means it is just the right cistance and
temperature ~ not too het, and not too cald ~
for liquid water to remain on its surface
and where you have liquid water, you have the
possibility of life
‘Their studies show that Gliese 581g is similar in
size to Earth, and that it has enough gravity to
be able to hold onto an atmosphere. The planet
has the highest ranking on a scale known as the
“Earth Similarity Index,” ~ meaning that itis
more likely to be able to support life than Mars
cr the Moon. What’s more, at 20 light-years away,
relatively close.
€ Sois it possible that one day human beings
might be living on another planet? Well, why not?
‘Already, companies are offering trips into space.
‘American Dennis Tito paid $20 million back in
2001 to go up to the International Space Station.
4s technology has improved, prices have come
down. Today, several commercial companies offer
tickets to space for a fraction of the price Tito
paid. Virgin Galactic offers flights to the edge of
space for as little as $200,000!
The sky is no longer the limit. NASA's Kepler
space telescope has already found more than
1,000 planets which might support life. Some
astronomers even say there could be billions.
‘There will definitely come a time when we will be
able to travel to other worlds on vacation, and
‘even emigrate into space. Would you want to go?
a Read the article about life in the universe. Match each heading with a paragraph (a-e).
1 The first “space tourist”
