About this Self-Learning Kit
Welcome to the world of Dressmaking!
This self – learning kit will introduce you the concepts to develop competencies:
plans, designs and sews sleeping garments. This unit covers the knowledge, skills and
attitudes needed to apply quality standards. The unit also includes the application of relevant
safety procedures and regulations, organization procedures and customer requirements.
This kit will present information about the techniques and processes which will guide the
learner in developing the skills and knowledge to work effectively and efficiently.
This learning material is not only your learning kit but also your trusted partner to
develop such skill. So enjoy and have fun!

This Self-Learning Kit requires you to go through series of learning activities such as
understanding key concepts, performing and accomplishing activities and assessments in
order to complete each learning outcome.

Perform all activities and assessment designed for you. Use separate sheet
of paper for your answers. Check your activities using the answer keys
located at the last part of the module.

Learning Competencies
1. Make a blouse pattern from bodice and skirt.
2. Provide seam allowances and necessary symbols on the pattern.
Discussion and Examples
Lesson 1 Manipulating Basic/Block Pattern
In manipulating basic pattern, it is always based on the previous pattern such as
making blouse from bodice and skirt.
Steps in Manipulating Pattern
1. Determine the design needed in sleeping garments.
2. Prepare the basic patterns for the:
a. Blouse
=blouse sloper +
skirt
b. Sleeve
c. Pockets

d. Pants e. Facing 2. Trace the neckline.
3. Measure 2 ½ inches
for the facing.
1. Join the shoulder line
of the front and back
blouse.
3. Determine parts, needs, subdivisions and extensions calls by the design.
4. Pin and trace basic pattern in a pattern paper.
- Measure the desired length of the
blouse
5. Transfer points needed in design manipulation
- Add ½ inch allowance on bustline
and hipline
- Connect the sides with hip curve
or slight curve.

6. Work on the design based on the project
plan.
7. Provide seam and hem allowances.
a. Front blouse
b. Back blouse
c. Sleeve
d. Pajama
e. Facing
8. Transfer seam and hem lines and other
symbols needed.
Cutting the Final Pattern
Final patterns consists all the necessary symbols, number of pieces per part and
garment design that will guide the fabric cutter and the sewer. Final pattern is cut at the
allowance provided for seams and design. (Refer to picture below)

Final pattern - shows the style of the garment to be constructed. It
contains the necessary seam allowances and symbols that are found in
the finished garment.
