Adding Polynomials

The document provides a lesson on adding polynomials, focusing on the concept of like terms, which are terms that can be added or subtracted because they share the same variable and exponent. It includes examples and practice problems for students to simplify expressions by combining like terms and adding polynomials. The document is structured into two parts: the first part emphasizes adding like terms, while the second part extends this concept to polynomials.

Part I – Adding ‘Like Terms’

Mathematics uses the terminology of like terms to discuss terms that have the same
variable and exponent.

Put simply: like terms are terms that can be added and subtracted because they involve
the same thing.

Take the following example:

2 𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 + 4 𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 + 5 𝑠𝑒𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑠 = 6 𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 + 5 𝑠𝑒𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑠

We are allowed to add 2 presidents with 4 presidents because they are the same term.
Conversely, we are not allowed to add presidents with senators because they are
different terms. We can generalize this example as follows:

2𝑥 + 4𝑥 + 5𝑦 = 6𝑥 + 5𝑦

We are allowed to add the 2x and 4x because they are using the same variable x. We
cannot add the x and the y because they are different variables.

Now, it’s your turn to practice—simplify the following expressions by adding or

subtracting the like terms.

1. 2.
𝑛 + 4 − 9 − 5𝑛 −2𝑥 + 11 + 6𝑥

3. 4.
3 𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑠 + 2 𝑏𝑖𝑟𝑑𝑠 + 4 𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑠 6 𝑖𝑃ℎ𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑠 − 2 𝐴𝑛𝑑𝑟𝑜𝑖𝑑𝑠 − 2 𝑖𝑃ℎ𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑠

5. 6.
−3𝑝 + 11𝑘 − 2𝑝 + 10 100𝑥 + 20𝑧 − 9𝑥 + 18𝑧

Part II – Adding Polynomials

Now we are going to extend the concept of adding like terms by adding polynomials.

Example:

Equation Steps

7 − 13𝑥 ! − 11𝑥 − 8 + 4𝑥 ! + 9𝑥

Now it’s your turn to practice this..

Practice Questions:

7. 8.
" "
3𝑎 + 1 + 8𝑎 − 7 3 − 6𝑛# − 8𝑛$ − 2𝑛# + 7𝑛$ − 1

9. 10.
" "
8𝑘 + 𝑘 − 6 − 10𝑘 − 7 − 2𝑘 14𝑝$ + 11𝑝" − 9𝑝# − 13 + 5𝑝# − 11𝑝"
