what we learned last week.

So, what did we learned last week, do you Yes, ma’am it’s all about verb phrase and noun

That’s right so what makes a noun phrase? Ma’am noun phrase is composed of noun plus
determiner and a modifier.
Very good! How about verb phrase? If we say verb phrase ma’am it is group of
words specifically the main verb and the
helping verb in a sentence.

Exactly! Verb phrase and noun phrase are

just two kinds of phrases there are many No ma’am they don’t have a complete thought

Okay. Let us
begin.
Grade 7 are you a good story teller? I’m
sure you are.

So, how’s your weekend dear students, how

did it go can you tell me and summarize
what happened?

What do you actually do during Saturdays

and Sundays?

What else? Class

What else? Did you stay all day in your

houses? Where did you go?

Oh, so that’s it. Then can you summarize all

of thus that you did and tell it to the class?
Yes, Maridel you are raising your hand?

Excellent! What Maridel did is summarizing

she retell what you guys usually do during
Saturdays with her own words.

That would be our lesson today so pay

attention because later on you will be also
summarizing. Alright? Without further ado
let’s proceed to our discussion.

C. DISCUSSION
Grade 8 do you know how to summarize?
Have you ever tried to summarize a passage,
a story or an article?

Then that’s good. Our lesson would be easy

as pie to you this would be just a review to
you right?

Okay then lend me your ears.

What is summary?

Very good! When we summarize, we re-tell

something we saw/ we/ read /heard with
fewer words and use our own words. In fact,
we do this all of the time. Let say for
example you see a movie that your friend
didn’t see and you wanted to tell them about
the movie. You wouldn’t go into every
single detail of the movie because that
would take a really long time. Right? You
would summarize it. Or if you read a status
of your crush in facebook that melts your
heart ad you wanted to talk about it with a
friend you would summarize it. I’m sure
you are very used to summarizing however
you also just need to get used summarizing
in writing in English.

So, what should we do when we

summarize? Please read?

Thank you, yes and a given text can have

one or more central ideas usually found at
the beginning the details in the particular
text are provided to support the main idea.

Let us take this example, please read it

again.

So, in this paragraph where is the main

idea? Or what is the main idea?

You got it! That is the main idea because the

writer of this paragraph is trying to explain
and reason why the stars look tiny here on
earth.

How about the key information?

This also includes details that further

establish one’s point.

So, in the paragraph where are the key

information there?

Yes, that’s it. That’s the different between

main idea and the key information.

In summarizing knowing the main idea and

the supporting details is the first step
because if you know the main idea you can
and you know what to write. The main idea
is actually where your sentences revolve.
Thus, you know what to include or exclude.

Here are the guidelines in writing a

summary, please read what does number
one said.

Yes, you should really understand what you

read so that you can report back on it in a
summary and when you’re writing a
summary, you’re just typically reporting
what you read what you saw or what you
heard in a shorter form you’re never giving
your opinion of the original source. Okay
remember that understand? Don’t forget
also to read with who, what, when, where,
why and how questions in mind.

Second what the second one that we need to

consider?

Yes, as I said a while ago a summary should

be a lot shorter than the original text.
Because were summarizing so pull out just
the main points the most important
information of the original source forgets
about any little details that were in the
reading or the original source like dates or
numbers and the likes unless they are very
significant to the main points then you
should include them.

Next?

Yes, because if you the same words use in

the original text that would be copying or
plagiarism and you cannot do that what will
constitute an f or is it also stealing and could
get you in trouble if you plagiarized.

One way to avoid this is to what we call one

word substitution for example
1. something easily broken, what is one
word we can use that represents something
easily broken? We can use the word what?

How about this one life history of a person

written by that person.
Brilliant that’s it so did you get the hang of
it?

What’s next?

That means that you should not include your

personal opinion on the ideas on the original
text.

Lastly?
Even when you pick out only the main ideas
from a text your summary still has to be
clear and organize. It should not sound like
a set of disjointed sentences when read.

Here is an example of a summary.

Original Text Summary

contrast to termites,
ants are usually dark
in color, are hard
bodied, and have

are light in color and

Flying ants do not
shed their wings.

D. GENERALIZATION
Okay so that’s it. That is how to summarize,
make it short, make it coherent and
summarize with your own words.

Okay put that in mind.

What are the guidelines in making a

summary can you enumerate them again?

IV. APPLICATION
Summarize each paragraph by answering the guide questions. Write your sentences together to form a
summary.
1. Man is a social being, every day, she/he interacts with others in the community. He meats different
persons in every necessity in order to survive. Students go to school and learn from their teachers. Parents
go to office and work with their officemates. Drivers pick up passengers. Vendors sell their merchandise
to various customers. An individual encounters different people day in and day out. Thus, a person should
learn how to mingle with others in positive way so that people would establish healthy relationships
among themselves.
Guide Questions:
1.) What does the paragraph say about man?
2.) Who are the persons an individual meets every day?
3.) what does man need to do?
Summary:

2. Pan de sal is a popular Filipino bread especially served at breakfast. Most people like to dunk the
sweet bread in their coffee. Some enjoy it with scrambled egg or hotdog, while others fill it with butter or
jam. Still others prefer toasted pan de sal with margarine. There are many ways to enjoy pan de sal in
every Filipino table.
Guide question:
