cut reinforcement with respect to these cardinal points and both its longitudinal and
transversal axis shall be checked for accuracy and same has to be got checked & approved by
the client prior to starting of boring activity. The entire survey layout shall be done by
surveyors using Total Station having 5” accuracy. The leveling work shall be carried out
using Auto Level.
5.2 Rig movement Sequence
Rig will be centered on pile point. Base machine with rotary drill will be positioned on firm
leveled ground. The level of base-machine will be checked with the help of spirit level on the
PROCEDURE FOR BORE CAST-IN-SITU PILE
base frame. The casing will be driven by help of hydraulic press & its verticality will be
checked. The diameter of the boring tools shall be 75mm less than the diameter of the pile.
5.3 Boring of Piles
The boring shall generally be done using hydraulic piling rig or tripod with conventional
winch.
a) If founding level is above soft rock level, boring may be done with hydraulic piling
rig. If required, tripod and conventional winch may also be used.
b) If founding level is in soft rock / hard rock level
Boring up to soft rock level may be done with hydraulic piling rig.
Boring in soft rock / hard rock shall be done with tripod and conventional winch
using chisel – bailer method
The boring will be carried out using bentonite slurry, as required to prevent the borehole from
collapse. 16mm thick temporary casing up to desired length shall be driven, working level
will be kept sufficiently above the detected static water level. The excavation equipment shall
be positioned in line with the vertical axis of the pile. Boring shall be performed by adopting
the following cyclic operations:
i. Lowering the excavation tool (Bucket or Auger or core barrel) up to the bottom of the
hole.
ii. Loading the soil by pushing and rotating the cutting tool.
iii. Extracting the tool from the hole.
iv. Discharge the soil / rock by opening / quickly rotating the bucket / auger / core barrel.
The above-mentioned excavation cycle will be repeated until the final depth is attained. The
level of boring shall be monitored by dropping sounding chain inside the borehole and
subsequent measurement of the chain by measuring tape. Level of bentonite slurry will be
maintained to the top of bore during all the phases of the excavation cycle. After completion
of pile temporary casing shall be removed by using crane without disturbing the bank.
Observations and records shall be made of the soil formations which are penetrated during
the pile boring. These observations shall be entered in the ‘Pile Bore Log Details’. During the
process of boring, the boring material shall be stored at suitable places beyond 1.50m from
edge of the bore hole and at regular interval shall be shifted to a designated dumping yard by
dumper / tipper.
PROCEDURE FOR BORE CAST-IN-SITU PILE
5.4 Pile termination
The pile termination shall be done by conducting SPT according to the length indicate in the
GFC drawing and as per site condition.
5.5 Cleaning of the Borehole
After completion of boring the borehole bottom will be cleaned by the cleaning bucket till all
loose, disturbed or softened material is removed from the borehole base.
5.6 Borehole Stabilization
During the entire operation, the pile bore will be kept stable with bentonite slurry. The level
of bentonite slurry shall always be kept close to the working level to eliminate probable side
collapse and to prevent subsequent necking of piles at the time of concreting. Bentonite slurry
of appropriate consistency (fresh density 1.05gm/cc) will be pumped into the borehole. The
bentonite solution that will be collected from the borehole along with the piling muck will be
guided along a channel into a muck pit provided near to the bore and then to the return tank.
The bentonite slurry preparation & recirculation procedure will be continued for the entire
piling operations.
5.7 Lowering of fabricated reinforcement cage
Pile reinforcement cage shall be fabricated as per the details given in approved drawing and
approved bar bending schedule as per IS 2502. The reinforcement cage, after completion,
shall be offered for checking to client. Reinforcement cage shall be sufficiently rigid to
withstand handling and installation without any deformation and damage. The reinforcement
cage shall be fabricated at fabrication yard in multiple pieces and shall be shifted from yard to
the pile location with the help of Hydra crane and / or trailer. While shifting the
reinforcement cages, special care shall be taken, so that the cage does not get damaged or
deformed. The reinforcement cage shall be clean and not rusty prior to lowering into the
borehole. The pieces of reinforcement cage shall be lowered one by one. The last one circle
of helical stirrups at each end shall be welded to main longitudinal bars. Reinforcement for
lap length lo = 1.8 times of the development length above the cut-off level or as specified in
the approved drawing. Lowering of the reinforcement will be done with the help of hydraulic
piling rig / crane. Proper cover and co–axial placement of the reinforcement cage in the pile
PROCEDURE FOR BORE CAST-IN-SITU PILE
bore will be ensured by use of circular concrete cover blocks threaded on to helix, cast
specifically for the purpose.
5.8 Concreting
Standard Technical Specifications for cast-in-situ concrete and allied works along with
IS:2911 (Part-1/ Sec-2) -Code of Practice for Design and Construction of pile foundations
(Bored cast-in-situ concrete pile) shall be applicable to concrete works for piles. Reasonably
minimum time interval between the completion of boring and placing of concrete will be
maintained (but not more than 6 hrs.).
Concrete as per approved mix design for M-35 Grade with OPC Ordinary Portland Cement
will be supplied from centralized batching plant / approved RMC supplier. Slump test will be
done to check the workability of concrete after the arrival of transit mixer at site. Permissible
slump shall be 150-200 mm as per IS Code. Concreting of the piles shall be done as per IS
2911 and also concreting supervision shall be done by experienced site personnel.
Concreting will be done by the standard tremie method. The gap from the bottom of bore to
the end of tremie pipe will be min 300mm & it shall penetrate at least 2m in previously
placed concrete. The dia of the tremie pipe will be not less than 200mm. Assembled tremie
pipe should be leak proof to prevent any bentonite to be mixed with concrete. Concrete will
be transported by means of transit mixers. The Tremie pipes shall be removed in stages
during pouring of concrete ensuring that the Tremie Pipe shall at all-time penetrate the
previously placed concrete with adequate margin against accidental withdrawal. Level of
tremie bottom against level of concrete top shall be recorded for future verification purpose.
The Tremie pipe shall not be withdrawn until the completion of concreting. At all times a
sufficient quantity of concrete shall be maintained within the pipe to ensure that the pressure
from it exceeds that from the seepage water. The concrete shall be cast up to 1m above the
cut-off level or as mentioned in the approved drawing. The concrete shall generally be poured
with minimum interruption. However, under unavoidable circumstances, if the operation has
to be suspended temporarily, then the tremie pipe shall be raised and lowered slowly from
time to time to avoid setting of concrete around it. Plug will be provided, and fresh concrete
of slight higher slump shall be poured and the same operation as mentioned above will
continue. After completion of pile, the casing will be removed carefully without disturbing
PROCEDURE FOR BORE CAST-IN-SITU PILE
the bank. Consumption of concrete shall be within tolerable limits as mentioned in the
contract.
5.9 Quality Assurance
Workability test shall be carried out on the concrete on arrival of transit mixer from batching
plant and records shall be maintained. Test cubes shall be cast as specified and the 07 days as
well as 28 days strength results shall be submitted to the Engineer. Cube identifications shall
be embossed on cubes with date of casting, structure identification, concrete grade and
reference number. Cube register shall be maintained as per IS 456:2000.
The reinforcement cages, fabricated as per approved Bar Bending Schedule, shall be
inspected as per GFC drawing and inspection checklist before lowering into the bore of pile.
