COURSE TITLE: Applied Mechanics

COURSE CODE: TIE 1206

1.0 COURSE AIM

This course aims to providing a basic understanding of the fundamentals of Applied


Mechanics; laws, vapour and gas cycles, energy sources & conventions of thermodynamics in
engineering applications.

2.0 COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course is to give students of engineering a thorough grounding in the subject of Applied
mechanics. The emphasis is on the application of the theory to real life situations. The student
is supposed to understand and use the general ideas of Newton’s laws, force systems and
equilibrium of rigid bodies, understand and use the general ideas of structural analysis and
general ideas of center of gravity, centroids and moments of inertia.

3.0 TEACHING METHOD

The topics covered are based on the syllabus for undergraduate studies in engineering.
The Course shall be conducted through lectures and tutorials for a total duration of 48hours.

1. Introduction to Mechanics:
i. What mechanics is and some applications in real life on an introduction basis
ii. Basics/fundamental concepts and principles of mechanics
iii. Newton’s Laws of Motion.

2. Force systems
i. Introduction of vectors and scalars as a basis
ii. Addition of vectors, Resultants, Vectors.
3. Equilibrium of Rigid bodies
i. Free Body Diagrams
ii. Couples
iii. Links.
4. Structural Analysis
i. Method of Joints
ii. Method of Sections
5. Distributed forces
i. Beams
ii. Types of beams
iii. Analysis of forces acting on beams
6. Internal Forces
i. Shear Forces (SH)
ii. Bending Moment (BM)
iii. Diagrams of shear and bending moments
7. Center of Gravity and Centroids
i. Center of Gravity
ii. Center of Mass
iii. Centroids of Lines, Areas and Volume.
8. Moment of Inertia, Friction. Virtual Work.

4.0 MODE OF ASSESSMENT


The student shall be assessed on:
i. Minimum 2 AssignmentS
ii. 1 Inclass Test
iii. 1 Examination (3hours)
Course assessment Percentage
1. Assignments 10%
2. Inclass Tests 15%
3. Final Exam 75%
Total 100%
