English teaching methods have evolved over time, from traditional approaches such as
grammar and translation to more communicative, student-centered methods. Some of the
most common approaches include the direct method, the audiovisual approach, the
communicative method, the lexical approach, and the CLIL (Content and Language
Integrated Learning) method.
Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages, and choosing the right method
depends on factors such as learning goals, educational context, and teacher and student

Teaching English as a second language is one of the challenges of the 21st century in many
countries around the world, and Colombia is no exception. That is why the Ministry of

should learn depending on the grade level for which it is necessary for teachers to know the
methods of teaching English and how to apply them, making an analysis of the context in

Another important point when choosing which teaching method to use is to analyze the
techniques used by each of these methods so that their application is effective and provides
better results. for example, the techniques used by the silent method allow the student to be
forced to use as many sentences as possible that he/she knows in English, until he/she is
able to find the teacher's teaching objective, while the teacher is the one who, through
images and short sentences in English, provides tools to the students so that they can create
their own sentences. On the other hand, the total physical response method uses a
combination of commands given by the teacher for the student to perform, i.e. it is based on
listening and speaking, as the learning objective.
Continuing to talk about the methods of teaching English, it is worth mentioning the audio
lingual method, which requires the formation of habits through repetition and gives great
importance to the development of oral expression and comprehension before the written, in
this method the mother tongue is not used, it is always spoken in the language to be taught,
so it is very important the attention paid to it. Grammar is taught indirectly, being the
student the one who learns it by listening, using positive reinforcement for the formation of
good habits.
On the other hand, the communicative approach suggests that the student should learn to
have a very good oral and written communication with other speakers and this is achieved
through recordings, dialogues and writing of what is heard to improve pronunciation and
listening. So we can say that the communicative approach is present in almost all models of
English teaching, since dialogues and conversations are the ones that cause more fear in
students when learning a new language.

We have to consider that there is no definition that is completely accepted by all learning
theorists, researchers and practitioners (Schunk, 1997). However, the following is a general
one of what the process is and that is close to what most professionals consider as learning.

that “Learning is an enduring change in behavior or in the ability to behave in a certain
way, which results from practice or other forms of experience.” (p. 17). With this in mind, it
can be determined that this is basically the objective pursued when teaching and it is this
experience that is intended to be transmitted so that it modifies or incorporates behavior
patterns that last over time.
Given the above, we can conclude that as learning, learning a second language is a complex
process that presents different alternatives for its teaching and that all are valid, each one
having its strengths and weaknesses, but the most important thing is to analyze, according
to the conditions, which one can provide better results depending on the moment, the
circumstances and the place.
