We use tenses to tell the timing of a sentence.This is related with the ‘Verb’.
There are 03 main tenses.

DIRECT SPEECH – INDIRECT SPEECH
Direct speech gives the exact words of the speeker.
Indirect speech gives the remarks of the speeker as quoted by someone else.
Rules to be followed in changing Direct speech into Indirect speech
1. If the reporting verb is in the present tense, the tenses of the Direct speech do not
change.
He says “I am not well” (D.S)
The conjunction “that” is used to introduce the indirect statement.
The helping verb “am” is changed to “is”
The pronoun “I” is changed to “he”
He says that he is not well. (I.S)
2. If the reported verb is in the past tense, all present tenses of the Direct speech are
changed into the corresponding past tense.

3. The pronouns of the Direct speech are changed.

4. If the reporting verb is in the past tense,the following changes too have to be made
when converting into indirect speech.

5. If reported speech relates to some universal truth,then no changes of the tense is
required.
6. Questions with verbs such as “do,does or did” ara changed into indirect speech using
“whether/if’.
Does she walk everyday?”,I asked her sister.
I asked her sister whether she walked everyday.

Opposite meanings: but,though,although etc
